I think that there are some over used weapons in games, namely the M16/M4 and the AK47. The RPG7 gets a lot of of use as well. Do you think there are any over used weapons in games, if so, tell us.I looked, this wasn't on the first page or two, so please don't scream if this has been here before.

My personal feelings for THE most overused weapon: Desert Eagle.
IT'S USED FOR HUNTING ELEPHANTS AND STUFF. Actually more accurately it's not used for ANYTHING because it's only used by collectors who think "Oh my god that round is huge! This gun kicks ass!"
If I made a game and was asked to include a desert eagle, I would make it UTTERLY useless; firing more than two shots in the space of 2 seconds would dislocate your wrist and essentially get you a game over.

I think the rocket launcher is a tad overused.
a tad? if there is a rocket launcher in a game i can guaruntee that it's the noobs 1st weapon of choice.
take halo for example. the rocket launcher isnt very good at long range, but if your a noob you wont care, you'll just run up and shoot like an idiot.

it's the same with the energy sword, i've seen loads of people just run around swinging the damn thing like an idiot and getting shot down by someone who can really play.

tl;dr all noob weapons are over used.

The gun and the sword. Where are my spears!

The ak is the weapon of availability so you have to let it slide. I'd say that you can't really over use a weapon if its in a proper context (ie. WWII your going to see alot of m1 garands and kar 98k mausers, modern day its the ak).

It really depends on the genre, and fine details into the setting, period, etc. If I'm playing a game where I'm fighting modern-day terrorist insurgents, for instance, I'm going to see a lot of AK-47s, because they're cheap, fairly reliable, and they're freakin everywhere and extremely easy to get ahold of en masse, especially if you're trading illegally.

Something like that may be common, but if it's setting-correct, I don't think it's really being "overused". I think it would be rather silly if Modern Warfare 2 equipped all the terrorists with laser guns, simply because someone decided the AK-47 was "old news".

What I'm saying is the setting and genre matter a lot.

The basic shotgun. Even "Painkiller" had one, and this is the game that gave us a gun that shoots wooden stakes and grenades. Not to mention the shurikens and lightning.

Why do I think the shotgun is overdone? - because it basically never changes. It's like the chicken in 16-bit platform games. Every single game used the chicken to boost your energy to full status. It's become a cliche.
