So I'm just now getting around to oc'ing my cpu that I bought a while back, and I wanted to ask the forum's advice before I went ahead and did it.

I've never attempted overclocking before, so I'm starting from square one. I found a youtube tutorial...but I'm not sure I trust it.

So, anyone have any specific advice? Where should I start? Links to helpful sites? What specs should I know before I begin?

Any information would be much appreciated. Although, I do intend to upgrade my cpu sometime in the near future, I'd like to complete the process without damaging it or my mobo. Oh speaking of which...motherboard is an EVGA E758-A1.

I have a coolermaster haf. No need for a bigger heatsink or fan. Does overclocking really cause shitty instability?

Yes you will need a better cooler for the CPU or you will not get much overclocking out of it, if any. A good case doesn't replace proper cooling. I know with my 950 the stock cooler was so shitty it barely was able to cool the chip at all.

Also make sure you get a program that will let you monitor the core temperatures and not the temperature of the die, it means shit. Grab something like CPU-Z or SpeedFan.

Messing around with BIOS, I've gotten it up to 3.2ghz so far, but I'm afraid to leave it like that. It seems stable, core temps are manageable...without a new cooler, too. Tested it with prime95 for a bit, but still not real confident. I've been using eleet to watch everything.

3.2 is a good jump from 2.66, so I'm happy with it. I just need to know that it'll be stable.

Only way you can know for sure it will be stable is to cheak the recommended highest voltage & temp and use prime for around 10-24hr. It's impossible for ous to tell you if that will be stable or not since it varies a lot depending on your cpu & cooler

What are your temps with prime95?

Steady around 60 C
