Overwatch: Worth it now?

Not trying to be a jerk at all- Can some of you who enjoy Overwatch tell me why you like it?

I'm curious if you like Team Fortress 2 or any team deathmatch from FPS games? If the answer is no, I can see why Overwatch wouldn't appeal to you. It's like asking someone why they enjoy a certain type of game (MMO, puzzles, etc) when they're just not your cup of tea.

Why do I like it?

I really enjoyed TF2 and this seems like a better/updated version of that. For me, the leveling and loot reward system is nice, but eventually I'll have the things I want for my characters and I won't care too much about it. I don't think I'll ever be a competitive player, but I enjoy playing solo on quickplay and with my friends. I play well enough to occasionally get the "Play of the Game" or be noticed in the end vote most of the time. I think it just comes down to I enjoy that type of gameplay, the team play works well (for the most part, occasionally you'll have someone making stupid decisions). Having owned the game for a little over a week I have not encountered any team griefers yet, though the potential is there the game is well balanced to prevent it. Overwatch, with its variety of characters and abilities appeals to me more than TF2. I can play assault, snipe, turtle up with tanks/defenders, play support helping my allies with healing, etc. There's enough there in this genre of game that I can always switch it up and enjoy myself.

Rather than a game like Destiny which requires a more substantial time commitment as well as grinding for loot for gear progression - I can Overwatch match for 5 minutes or so and leave to go take care of things if I get busy around the house.

I'm just a big fan of the "Hero Shooter" genre. I love playing games like TF2, Borderlands, Batlleborn, and even Evolve (I found Paladins to become incredibly repetitive even by the standards of the genre). OW is, imo, the best one out right now, simple as that.

Yeah, I've definitely enjoyed plenty of shooters before, some of which have had a focus on different classes. Titanfall, Rainbow Six games, Killing Floor 2, Battlefield, Gears of War, and I used to play some Halo and Cod back in the day before the franchises jumped the shark. I've also spent a couple hundred hours in League and I was a regular WoW player up through Wrath of the Lich King. Rising Storm 2: Vietnam just came out and I'm enjoying that and the beta for Quake Champions was pretty neat. None of these are super analogous to Overwatch but I do like a wide variety of shooters.

Gotcha- Maybe I'm a little disgruntled because I feel like I should like it since I enjoy mobas to a certain degree and enjoy shooters. I think I might just be bouncing off the aesthetic and community more than the game. Having a shooter that is good for long stints or quick play sessions does sound nice. I think I prefer the more militaristic/realistic style of Titanfall for that though. Glad you and other players are really enjoying it though!

Yeah from your background of game types you might not enjoy as much the cartoonish and... kind of silly(?) stuff behind the gameplay and the characters. I would not recommend it to you - but perhaps if you can catch a free weekend or something you can check it out?

To bash the game:

I'm not very fond of Blizzard's storytelling or world creation. They do a good job of making a backstory and history, but Blizzard is more about "oh this will look cool" with various poses, looks, and ridiculousness. I poked fun of Blizzard's teasers for Overwatch and asked "Do we really need another Team Fortress?". Hanzo turning and posing for the camera (I call him the Handsome Ninja) - Reaper with his edgy emo look when using his special spins in a circle saying, "Die! Die! Die!" in his deep gravely voice.

I do enjoy the funny stuff and emotes, like Junkrat stepping on his trap mine to blow himself up in the air so he can fly or D.Va taking a selfie as her mech explodes behind her.

I think Blizzard tries to appeal to a more Eastern style of game design at times. Some of the released story trailers are alright - but they all come off feeling like a Saturday morning cartoon that your friends are all talking about (like DBZ or Naruto or Pikachus or whatever the hell the kids are on about these days). It almost feels like Street Fighter's setup in how the characters have a backstory and there's an overall story behind everything, but it's pointless really because gameplay. I have to say it has been exceptionally well balanced gameplay with their maps and character attributes - but Blizzard time as they continue to hammer away at things that aren't broken* (as they did with WoW).

*- I know there are SOME issues with the game right now like the Roadhog nerf and those for/against it, but when I played Beta Overwatch it was as finely tuned as it could be, then after release I started reading about how they were making changes to it for various reasons, in regular Blizzard fashion.

Overwatch was always worth it to me and certainly is with all the extra stuff now. Really I am not even a fan of Blizzard games and been on an Overwatch hiatus but it is worth the money I spent for it.

Its preference but for me the short rounds make it work. There is no filler, everything you do counts and unlike, say Battlefield, where a long game on a losing team can take forever, a bad game is quickly over and you can get into it.

I can see that, but what I personally feel when I get stomped is just mad. Win or lose, a 6 minute game is like, things haven't even gotten started. I just want to play the game, but it ends and I have to watch Junkrat throw a tire again. Then the game kicks me to matchmaking.

I disagree that the game is about support, Ive run teams with 1 and no healer. The game is about looking at what is not working and changing up to counter it. The good players flex and adapt.

During the free weekend, there was once or twice there were no healers, and I was bored of healing. I got hit with an a single arrow. Then I ran back wondering whether I should kill myself or not.

If you opponent rolls 3 tanks you adjust to it and there are counters, bastion, sombra, reaper, pharah, tracer, roadhog... You do not have to meet Reinhart with Reinhart. You need to play the game to get a feel for this though.

What I figured was being Reinhardt, even without equal firepower, at least you can cover for your team while they can at least attempt to shoot down the shield, and your shield is intimidating enough to slow them down... a little.

Well google is wrong then.

At higher levels people know not to respect Reinhardt's shield. It's not a real physical barrier, you can run through it, no reason to treat it like a wall.

Seriously, there are plenty of counters to Reinhardt. Sombra takes down his shield, reaper absolutely destroys him with damage. Walk at Reinhardt as reaper and there is literally nothing that the reinhardt can do to stop you. Dva, Soldier, Junkrat, and Bastion have a really easy time destroying Reinhardt's shield. Symetra can use Reinhardt's shield to charge her damage, and if he puts down his shield to attack her, the damage from her laser will melt him before he manages to finish her off (doubly so if you have her ult up and have 75 extra health). Mei's Ult goes through Reinhardt's shield. There is almost nothing that Reinhardt can do to stop a Pharah from raining rockets down on him from above. Sure, he could put his shield over his head, but she'll still do splash damage to him, and that leaves him exposed for the rest of the team to shoot at him.

Literally half the characters in the game are Reinhardt counters.

Season 2 saw a lot of deathball with a 3 tank meta but you will not do too well with that now. There was a brief stint of teams running "el presidente" last season with bastion shielded by rein and supported by mercy but that disappeared after Bastion was rebalanced.

Google is wrong, there are so many rein counters. Bastion is also a really one dimentional charecter who can be countered out of the game by multiple heroes. He does not feature at all in high level play at the moment.

To me it just felt like low skill ceiling, mass market check box of a game meant to appeal to the "lulz kappa" crowd. I don't give a crap about cosmetics so maybe that loot box reward cycle having no effect on me limits the appeal of the game for me.

Anyway, again, I know that sounds kind of dickish, but I honestly just don't get it. It looks like Tumblr-The Game. I think my opinion is skewed a little though. I find certain subsets of the Blizzard fan base pretty annoying.

I never payed wow or starcaft but I love OW.

Id argue there are some high skill ceiling charecters, genji, ana, hanzo, widow, macree? All need good skills to use effectively. Then there are more accessable heroes like soldier and hog.

I like that it is constantly being rebalanced, new content is coming for free all of the time? I lile that if it gets a bit samey you can play a completely different role. The charecters are likable and the world oozes charm. It is a slick class and objective based shooter. If you are a straight team deathmatch sort of player then you need to try this before deciding to buy it. If you liked TF2 then this is up your street?

My biggest complaint is that it doesnt force everyone into team chat. This is a team game with lots of differing strategies. Coms win games.

I think you summed up perfectly one of the main things that rubs me wrong about Overwatch, "Tumblr-The Game". Hope you don't mind me stealing that.

Also, it blows my mind how often people compare this game to TF2. TF2 has a much higher skill cap than Overwatch, which is part of what kept it going for so long. The only character in Overwatch with something similar in skillcap is Widowmaker, every other character has at least one "I win" button.

I am unsure what you mean by "Tumblr- The Game". Do you mean their cast of diverse characters, or just the general artstyle? I am a tad confused. It's not like these characters are anywhere close to tumblr's fetishism of non-white races.

As for the Skill cap thing, I think that patently false. Certain characters do have less of a skill cap than others comparatively to tf2(soldier 76 is literally just a regular fps hero who's Ultimate is an aim hack), but the difference between a good Winston, or Lucio for example, and a bad one, is staggering. It's when to engage, when to pull back, do you go for a regular tank group, a dive comp, or something else entirely? When do I use my ultimate, should I use it now? Later? An enemy used their ultimate, how do I counter it, or avoid it? Should I switch characters to counter pick, or keep at it as my current character? There are lots of ways to counter "I win" buttons, especially considering several of them leave their users stationary, or do nothing hugely impactful on their own. Learning how to counter them is part of the overall skill cap.

Tldr: I dont think its fair to say it has less of a skill cap than tf2. In fact, I dont think it's fair to either game to compare them to one another. They require slightly different skill sets to master. I would say that Overwatch is closer to a Moba like League or HoTS than tf2, mainly because of the focus on team fights. Not to say that tf2 doesnt do teamfights, it just does it differently to how Overwatch does it.

Anyways, you dont seem too terribly interested in the game, but I would be glad to answer or clarify any questions you may have. I may have come off as a fanboy or something, but really, I play the game only every once in a while, so I am sorry if I came off as rude.
