Okay, so this week I've been wandering the country visiting a bunch of universities. In the course of my travels, I've ended up in Oxford for the night (awaiting tours tomorrow).

Anyhow, it transpires that my cousin has been delayed in France and I'll have no company tonight. I have a place to stay and food to eat, but nothing to do...

The point being, has anyone got any cool ideas about how to spend an evening in an unknown town? It should be noted that I'm too young to buy alcohol, and on limited funds...
If you (somehow) actually live in Oxford, what would you recomend? Would you (dare I ask) consider hanging around with a fellow Escapist to save him from boredom?

Well I live near Oxford (but sorry I'm in Reading right now) I say just go to the Cinema, there's 2 Odeon Cinemas in town.

Come on; if you're gonna go to the cinema you want to go to either the Phoenix or the Ultimate Picture Palace.

I'm one of the annoying high-schoolers who looks old enough to fit in with the students

Not a bad idea. Incidentally, I just went through Reading on the train...

The Ultimate Picture Palace sounds cool. Are you an Oxford native too?

Yeah they're better (especially better than the one by the bus station) But I was thinking closer to the centre, though Phoenix isn't that far off. Never personally been to The Ultimate Picture Palace But that does sound good.

Not native; grad student. Though the UPP is only really feasible if you're up near Cowley Road (e.g. if your staying at or near Magdalen College). The Phoenix is in Jericho, thus if you're staying at e.g. Somerville or Worcester then that makes more sense. This of course presumes that you're staying at a college and nor just at a hotel...

Uh huh suuure you are....

No but seriously, I can't say anything about Oxford specifically but I would just go check out the downtown area, where ever that is. I mean that's a good to figure out what the area is like at night, and then I would go see a movie later after the shops and restaurants are closing and stuff

If you're eating out, go to Atomic Burgers on Cowley Road. Try the Godzilla challenge, if you eat like a horse.

I suggest a book shop. Strike up a conversation with one of the people who work there who happens to be of the gender to which you are persuaded, and casually mention you're from out of town and have nothing to do tonight.

You should end up with some company for your plans to get food and a movie.

I'm at New college (just arrived in my room), and I've realised I also need to eat...

Also, I'm fighting the urge to ask for company; I don't wanna be creepy, but neither do I want to wander around alone...

Did they not provide hall food? They normally do... Also, you're not up here as a prospective Chemistry student, are you? I know the Physical Chemistry tutor at New...

Nah, I need to find my own food. And while chemistry is interesting, I'm a mathematician by trade.
