Pacific Rim 2 Script in the Works by del Toro & X:Men: The Last Stand Writer

Director Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that he and X-Men: The Last Stand scribe Zak Penn have been penning the sequel to Pacific Rim 2 in "secret" and how they "found a way to twist it around."

While we've heard earlier this year that In an interview with BuzzFeed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/133099-A-Pacific-Rim-Sequel-Is-Possible], Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that he, along with Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, The Incredible Hulk), are no penning the screenplay for Pacific Rim 2.


I'm working very, very hard with Zak Penn, We've been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham was involved in the storyline and now I'm writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.

Del Toro clarifies that Legendary Pictures has not formally agreed to finance a sequel, but that he and Penn are proceeding with the assumption that it will be made some day, stating, "I don't have the money, but I'm proceeding like it is happening."

Regarding the plot of the sequel, del Toro squashed all rumors of it being a prequel, and added that characters Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) will indeed be returning, with the story following the events of the first movie.


Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion...I'm going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one - but you will get really great spectacle.

While Pacific Rim didn't set the domestic box office on fire as some thought it would, it did fare well internationally raking in over $309 million during its theatrical run.

Beacham's working as show runner on a new series for (I think) Fox, so he doesn't have the time to work on a sequel's script. It sounds like he had some involvement in developing the plot, though, so he'll probably still get a story credit if/when the film happens.

Why do I get a feeling that by twisting it around, it gonna be a Jeager gone mad/ mental (maybe a neuro link virus) and the human end up creating their own Kaju to fight it.
Either way I am looking forward to this given how much I LOVED that film!

..Eh, I'm a bit skeptical. But Del Toro loves his big robot vs kaiju setting, so I have some faith that'll he be a grounding factor for him.

Bigger monsters will be a thing, if the creators of the kaiju use the same strategy. Which of course means bigger robots. Perhaps some Voltron-esque combiner shenanigans are in order?

2: The Rift works as a multi-layer gateway, you need a "code" to get into it, but where it drops you off is randomized, as such if there are 10 worlds connected to the rift, you go in one side and could pop out in 9 potential alien worlds, therefore whoever the aliens they bombed were, werent the bad guys, just another race connected to the rift who may have been fighting the kaiju just as well.

i heard it might have newt going nuts from drifting with a kaiju and creating some kind of kaiju jeager hybrid.

Hopefully they don't spoil the ending of the first movie by putting Mako and The White Guy in a relationship.

As for a plot, maybe the humans will go back to what they do best and start wars with each other. Then the Kaiju reappear and various factions have to decide which is more important; using the opportunity to strike down their human enemies or team up to stop the Kaiju again (then probably stab each other in the back). Throw in a line about humans being 'Just like them!' and we're golden.

I'd like to see larger Kaiju too and have groups of Jaegers take them down as a team rather than the mostly 1 on 1 fights from the first film. Perhaps some more variety in locations and Jaegers too, like one that is more like a massive mobile artillery truck.

To be fair, with The Last Stand the poor guy was being forced to cram 2 major plotlines into a single 2-and-a-bit hour movie.

And he still did a better job with it than the douche responsible for X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

What I DON'T wanna see is under water battles. The whole movie was great until they went diving.

As for the "twist" I bet it's some boring plot about how the aliens manage to keep the portal open or reopen the portal.

They could pull a Gears of War 2 and attack the Kaiju on their home turf. But the characters from the first film will object to the government's aggression and go rogue. So then the governments will send their mass produced Jaegers to attack the heroes at their base of operations and oh shit this just turned into End of Evangelion.

The good: Sequel to "PUNCH IT IN THE FACE!"

The worried: X-Men The Last Stand was bad. Very bad.

What I want: Please have the other Yagers not suck and die two minutes into the fight. I was really looking forward to seeing what the Chinese and Russians could do, and yet they get wasted before they really do anything. I mean they both got taken out by the same Kaiju. That's Kaiju 2, Yagers 0. Depressing.

What I don't want: Do NOT make them a couple. Becket and Mori not being a romance couple was a breath of fresh air. Please don't ruin that in the sequel.

I don't see it making too much difference overall who writes for it. The first time I saw PR it was on a plane and I hadn't shelled out for the earbuds, so I watched the whole thing with iron maiden and avenged blasting on my ipod.

The movie was damn good that way, and I could tell everything that was happening anyway - the only thing I guessed wrong was that the douchebucket was the son of his partner and not his brother. I honestly felt the movie was worse when I actually saw it with the dialog in, just a generic feeling storyline/group dynamic getting in the way of awesome robot fights.

Still hyped as fuck for a Pacific Rim 2! I honestly don't care how good or bad the final movie turns out to be, regardless of what this "big twist" turns out to be... like, for some reason, we have Jeagers and Kaiju fighting on the moon for some reason or Charlie and Rinko's characters, apparently, dating because it was referenced in the narrative dialogue at the beginning of the movie...

So yeah... I don't think anything would outright disappoint me right now outside of Legendary Pictures not allowing this sequel to exist in the first place...
