Okay. First off, I must make amends for the error of my ways. I love metal, yet I have never listened to a full Pantera album.

*hangs head in shame*

But I want to be better. There's an insane amount of metal heads in this forum, and I want your advice guys. What are the top three Pantera albums, and in what Order should I purchase them to give them a listen?

Cowboys from Hell.
Far Beyond Driven.
Vulgar Display of Power.

You're not missing much, I find them somewhat over rated honestly. Cowboys from Hell is a great album however.

The song Floods has the best guitar solo ever recorded. I believe it's on Vulgar Display of Power , not sure though, it's been a while since I broke out my Pantera CD's.

What on Earth is Pantera?

Is it some metal band that everybody worships? It sounds like it.

Why are they so popular then?

Enlighten me.

well i believe their popularity raised due to the far too early departure of Dimebag.. One of the most iconic metal guitarist of their time.. =[ sadly the metal scene lost Dimebag during a show with Damage Plan who he was lead guitarist for. An Ex-Navy soldier shot him =[

Floods is on The Great Southern Trendkill. It's awesome.
Basically, all the Pantera albums are good in their own way, the newer albums are just angrier and more brutal than the older ones.
IMO, start with Cowboys from Hell and work your way through them all chronologically.

They won the Academy award for best band ever. anyway, they just rule. Listen to them and try not to pumped up, it's impossible.

As for the albums -

Cowboys from hell
Vulgar display of power
great Southern Trendkill

My quote has always been from Vinny -

"I'd kill myself for you, I'd kill you for myself"

I just listened to a couple of their songs.

I have to say, I found them to be pretty awful. But then, I'm not really a fan of metal.

Still, it just didn't sound good to me.

I'm not a fan of Pantera.

Much like Cliff Burton when someone from a mediocre band dies they're suddenly elevated to the status of Gods that people worship.

No, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are Gods.

Metallica and Pantera in terms of Thrash/Speed sit in the shadow of Slayer, Venom and Motorhead.

Vulgar Display of Power.

I have to admit, it'd be a lot easier to say, just go listen to them all.

*splutters* How dare you have a different opinion!

Actually, I reckon that's fair, they do have a rather...umm...unique sound. It took me a while to get into them.

What do you mean by "unique" Demon? I'm not sure what you mean by that, personally they sound like a mediocre Thrash band.

By unique I'd say that they just, to me, always sounded different to other thrash metal bands. Personally, I thought they were prog when I first heard them, since they seemed to play in weird tunings that complemented the singing, which always seemed to be out-of-tune at first but then subtly altered somewhere in the song so that it actually sounded right.

It's quite a hard sensation to describe, and I'm sure I haven't done it justice.

However, I'm not here to convert people to Pantera-ism, so if you don't like them, that's cool.
