At todays standards Pantera are seen as quite ordinary.
Around almost every corner there is a bunch of guys making 'hardcore' which mainly consists of downtuned guitars, growled unaudable lyrics played along stupidly easy and repetative riffs.
BUT back in the 90s when most of the other metal bands were a bunch of pussies and would sell out for a tiny bit of air time (ie, Metallica) Pantera stayed heavy and true.
In the old days Pantera were a powermetal band and you can tell when you listen to 'Cowboys from hell' cus of Phils singing style.
As the albums go on they get heavier and faster (but not always better).
Personally my fave album is 'vulgar display' simply because its a well rounded album with alot of good songs on it (Mouth for war, walk, regular people, this love etc).
Although they weren't known as the most technial band (musically) Dimebag was an incredible guitarist, they pretty much invented the 'groove metal' style and probably a major influence in around 90% of metal bands around today.
If you don't 'get' them now you probably never will - so their is no point trying to convince you otherwise. At the time they we're a part of the big 5 (Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Sepultura, Megadeth) that HEAVY metal was all about.
As for albums I would say it depends on if you like the heavy shit or not:

1) I am assuming that you don't listen to hardcore on sole principle that you put it in quotes. I am a rabid hardcore fan so I might be biased, but as with every other genre on the face of this planet, there are good bands and bad bands. Not everything appeals to the same people. And to the response about playing extremely easy riffs; why does that even matter? If you listen to songs for just technical difficulty, go cream your pants over Dragonforce and Dreamtheatre like a good fan boy (this is not meant to start a flame war). Most hardcore songs actually have fairly difficult riffs anyway. Look up the tab for The War is Ours by Escape the Fate. While it may not be hard it is difficult for someone who isn't that experienced.
2)And don't dis other people's music. Calling other bands sell-outs or pussies is completely unnecessary. And the term sell out is ridiculous. Everytime you do something to get a bonus or a raise, I'll call you a sellout. The music industry is just that. An industry. With bands getting screwed by torrent and file sharing they have to make some sort of revenue. Radio does that as does touring. They're just trying to make money so don't insult them, you would do the same if you were capable.

Yes people enjoyed it but it felt like one of those things where people liked the 'big noise' without looking at it any deeper, meaning it could have easily been replaced with elevator music or someone using a large drill.
But yes, I agree that there are always good bands and bad bands and as a genre I just don't enjoy it as much - so I guess in that way I am also biased.
I'm definatly not a fanboy and quite happily dislike albums of bands that I like if they suck (the album / songs). I just see muscial ability differently since I can relate to it. Again I have heard alot of music that is very technical but sounds awful because of they tried too hard to keep the music 'structured' and forgot to make it sound good.
Again this is my own opinion. I didn't like the way Metallica was getting 'weaker' as the albums went along. If I listen to alot of the very early Metallica like 'Kill um all' or 'Ride the lightning' then the stuff they play then is excellent. But as the albums went on the desire for popularity and money came first, so the talent and the musical style had to go more 'mainstream' (which is selling out to me).Mithander said:

Even now you look at bands like Slayer, you wont see them headlining any huge gigs anymore (which is unfair) but their fanbase is as strong as ever and will simply outlast alot of other bands.
I would say Vulgar is the definitive Pantera album, it's certainly the most consistent. A lot of their albums have filler towards the end but Vulgar is good all the way through. Cowboys From Hell and Far Beyond Driven are also decent. The other ones, not so much. I think most Pantera fans would generally agree, at least the ones I know do.
Pantera always dissapointed me a little because Phil Anselmo never really walked the talk of his lyrics, but I can still appreciate a good riff and at their peak they certainly had those in spades.

I was of the same opinion when I first heard them, very uniquely sounding. I think you have to get used to listening to Pantera, by a few tracks like Cemetary Gates, Walk and Hollow really got me into them.DemonGuy792 said:

Pantera give metal a bad name. Every genre so called 'elitist' metalheads hate, such as nu-metal, metalcore ect, can be traced back to Pantera. They gave us bands like Slipknot and Disturbed. Pantera is the reason that the 'mainstream' population think metal is for talentless, braindead good-for-nothings.

Don't get me wrong I Love Pantera BUT to some point they are over rated. It all depends on what you're looking for. If you want a more power metally sound, then Cowboys from Hell is your best bet. A more extreme sound can be found on The Great Southern Trendkill or Reinventing the Steel, with harsher vocals and more evil sounding-ness. A good middle ground can be found on A Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven.
Personally, my top 3 are Vulgar Display, Trendkill and Far Beyond Driven.
Just whatever you do, don't listen to any pre-Cowboys era stuff of theirs. Even Pantera themselves didn't care for it.

Pantera isn't one of my favorite metal bands, but I'd have to say that as far as older metal is concerned, they influenced my playing more than the more famous acts like Metallica and Sabbath and [insert favorite classic metal band here]. They have always been a band that teetered on the line between mainstream and underground popularity. Musically, the guys were gifted, Vinny and Dime doing things that others hadn't done.
