So I always found parkour to be extremely douchey, and always thought of people that do it as stuck up. I even was surprised when a friend of mine was attempting to "master" it, luckily he did not succeed.
Now granted, there are some amazing stunts I've seen done, and I always appreciate innovative ways or moving around the city, but I still can't make myself like it, or the people that do it.
Because it's not like they don't drive cars at all, but they show off jumping on trash bins for the camera. It's just a stunt, but it's classified by some as "way of navigating over every obstacle in front of you, instead of bypassing it" in lame-mans terms.
So in short, this was a rant on why I think parkour is just some street stunts, nothing more.
And so I give you the only parkour video I've ever enjoyed.
Parkour started before cars were invented, it was a way of navigating alot of cities. Yes, nowadays, it's flashier and more stunt based, but then again skateboards were also once just a mode of transportation until tricks were discovered and they made it as flashy as possible.
It's cool and It involves effort, anything can be seen as douchey In the right light, also every parkour "master" out there is gonna have a leg up In the zombie apocalypse.
As long as they only hurt themselves I see it as a gift to Humanity that people willing to do stuff like that put themselves into possibly hazardous situations.
Unfortunately I can see it hurting many others and potentially turning an already soul-crushing workday into Hell on Earth. So no I don't really think of it as a considerate thing to do in most social situiations.
Parkour is a extream sport, much like Down Hill Mountian Biking, you could say that DH MTB is stuiped and pointless becouse all you have to ride around obsticals to get to the bottom. Much like Parkour, DH MTB is about getting from A to B as quick as posible. You could also say that DH MTB is just a stunt, you could say all sports are stunts, but you would be heavily critasized.
I think it's really cool and anyone who is good at it deserves praise. I've never actually met anyone who really does it and doesn't just jump across tables and stuff so I can't say they aren't douches but I find it pretty hard to believe that if you do parkour then you're automatically a douche.
Just like the image says, Parkour is about getting around as quickly as possible, which is often achieved in creative ways.
When you see people back-flipping off walls that isn't Parkour, it's just showing off. But that's what everyone seems to think Parkour is.
There was a big Parkour craze at my school which consisted of people jumping off walls and attempting handstands, which in reality is just a combination of acrobatics and being a dick rather than what they thought it was.
I started doing track as a first step to parkour but then I discovered I like freerunning more and it hurts less. I did track for a full year but never really learned any backflips and what not...
Nah, I bet you were just trying to do things too far outside your comfort level. You gotta start easy, like Office Parkour. Me, I took baby steps. I did Parkour at the waterpark I used to work at as a lifeguard, but I didn't want to use the structures themselves. That might encourage the younger guests to copy me, and that's frowned upon. So, I parkour'd on the guests. Whenever I had to go into the pool to rescue a guest in distress, I would jump on top of the heads of the other guests, yelling "PARKOUR!!!" all the while.
I have a friend who claimed to be in a parkour club.
I asked him about it, and he told me it was a bunch of his friends who went around and found places to practice, and learn new tricks. I asked him who was teaching them, and he told me about a really cool russian guy who jumps around on rooftops, and does hardcore stunts and stuff. I was confused, and after about 5 minutes of trying to get him to elaborate, I discovered that he wasn't actually teaching them. He was some guy who posted a video on youtube, and hadn't even made contact with them.
I went to a park with him and one of his friends about a week later to hang out, and they started jumping from ledge to ledge on a wall, and called it parkour. I didn't have the heart to tell him how much of an idiot he looked like, and how it wasn't even remotely like parkour, he was just jumping on things, like an 8 year old on a bed.
My friend is kind of an idiot.
Parkour is not a sport, it is just trying to get rom point A to point B the fastest and self disipline, not about showing people how good you are. That though is free running.
