These days, going to college and not getting a free ride seems to make you some employers *****. I'm a retail *****. I do sales and stock and deal with people because I can't seem to think of another options. The worse part is that full-time Monday through Friday employment is not something I can do because I am going to school for a career, so I'm not making minimum wage. My current job wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the new management insisting I sell warranties or I won't be fired and while my views on warranties are not really coming into play I really am not big on selling them and need a job so looking for a new job probably isn't a bad idea. Anyone have any tips or experience like mine? I'm a hard worker and do very well working but selling warranties is not my thing. I've done commission jobs and hate those for about the same reason. I just want a job I can work and do weekends. Any suggestions? Thanks for reading it.

Read the legalities of employment law.

When i was 16/17 i had a part time job as a waiter, I earned £3.60 an hour (around $7.20 at the time's exchange rate), which was minimum wage for my age at the time. I was fecked over majorly with holidays, management, And the hours. I was working 6/7 hour shifts with no breaks, No food, Nothing.

The cheeky thing was, If you worked a close shift (the kitchen stopped serving food at 22:00), you were paid 30 minutes to clean the kitchen (i.e you stopped getting paid @ 22:30), The rest was on your own time. If it was a busy night, Food would still be leaving the kitchen at 22:40, and i didnt leave till 02:00/03:00, all of which on my own time.

My problem was i became..."in my safety zone", i didnt want to rock the boat or stand up for myself as i didnt want to lose my job. If i knew what i know now, I wouldve stood up for myself and everyone else in there, They sure as hell couldn't fire me for my complaints.

Seriously, Know your rights, then right your wrongs. If you are being paid below minimum wage, (and your in the uk) dont even bother telling the employer - Go straight to Revenue & Customs. The company will be fined thousands, And it should all be done on a confidential basis (they wont know its you) - If im right, it will be done on a "Whistleblower" basis.

See I know exactly where you're coming from and was not scared to fire back at an employer. I worked for a little mom and pop pizza shop doing delivery. Tips were fine and gas comp was....acceptable. But my paychecks were so light for the hours I'm working. And, lucky for me my stepfather is an accountant that specializes in employee payroll. Well, crunching the numbers it didn't add up and when I approached them about it their excuse was that I never worked as many hours as I said I was. Yeah, that came around like a swift wind of timeclock tampering.

My biggest thing is that I don't HATE the job, just the "sales culture," they want to breed. I can sell you a computer, and if you're interested I will throw in my two cents. But, warranty sales is not my thing and an insane goal doesn't help matters. The rest of the job I really don't mind.

My friend has the same attitude, He hates retail.

Thing is, if you are in education at the same time, Its only temp until you find a better job.

It could be worse, I work nights. My bodyclock is screwed.

(just a quick note, If you press the "Quote" button, It tells me you've responded to me, If you're responding to someone in general its usually more efficient to quote them. :])

I don't hate retail. Working minimum wage for as long as I have it isn't something I hate. I certainly don't want to be in it forever but I don't hate it. What I hate is the sales that is being pushed into it nowadays.
