Been to a few. None were much fun, though. Except the geek only party where we had 18 people playing D&D. God, that was awesome but the neighbour actually complained about the music. hahaha
As someone who has partied with Municipal Waste I must say that you are missing out.Mutie said:Dearest Escapist; do you party? Do you like parties? What was the last party you went to and what crazy shit happened there?
EDIT: I'm not attacking parties. Nor am I attacking people who attend and enjoy parties, I'm just starting a discussion about them. Don't just talk about or insult my personal stance on the subject; discuss the topic, dudes.
Dude, you've partied with Municipal Waste!? That must have been... Fucking MINT!! I think this is the best advice yet; I'm definitely gonna start attending these things (if only to study them, haha) but I doubt I'll be drinking... intolerance to the worlds most widely accepted casual drug is a *****.BonsaiK said:As someone who has partied with Municipal Waste I must say that you are missing out.
A party is just an unnaturally forced social event where several barely-acquainted people are crammed together and are expected to socialise. It's awkward, often unpleasant and feels weird for everybody. It's pretty natural to not like them. That's why so much alocohol is consumed, it's a social lubricant that relaxes the inhibitions a bit and lets people feel more comfortable in such a strained environment. Very few people really like parties for the party itself, what they actually like is the benefits that parties provide. Meeting new people, having new experiences, dancing, (often free) substance abuse, sexual hijinks, music, catching up with friends, social networking, and relief from boredom are just some of the things that lure various people into a "party" situation.
The beautiful thing about parties is that if you don't drink (I don't), and you've got enough confidence and enough of a "whatever" attitude to handle the awkwardness, you'll upstage about 90% of the people at any party you go to, who will all be mishandling opportunities with the opposite sex, passing out in pools of their own puke and generally being douchebags. I've met most of my girlfriends in situations like this simply because I stood out as relatively conscious and was thinking clearly enough to make sensible decisions. So in that sense I do "like" parties although I'm often only there because of business obligations and they can sometimes be boring if there's nobody there I can connect to.
The last party I went to was one I dropped in at to pick up my girlfriend, some art exhibition thing of some kind. People were eating at a big display of food that was arranged to look a bit like a corpse on an autopsy table, and there was really weird art and free booze everywhere and an odd low-light ambience. I didn't stay for long, just long enough for my girlfriend to say goodbye to her friends so I could take her home.
Looking at parties as an "anthropological experiment" is a good way to experience them without worrying about feeling too out of place. Don't worry about not drinking, I never have. If you wander around with soft drink or juice in a glass people will often assume you've put vodka in it anyway so you won't look too weird.Mutie said:Dude, you've partied with Municipal Waste!? Oddly enough, that last party sounds awsome...
Remarkable. You wouldn't happen to be me, would you? Have you ever been involved in a weird cloning experiment?Mutie said:I also never went to parties. I was never invited to parties and I never really wanted to go to them anyway. I find large groups of people highly disconcerting, sexual activity somewhat repulsive and alcohol all out abhorrent... so it's rather odd that I lamented my lack of invitation. I, despite my perpetual loneliness, always felt that little bit more left out.
So it is odd you might say that, in this, my first two weeks of University, I have been invited to more parties than I have in all the years of my life... and not attended a single one. The mandatory course party notwithstanding of course... But the fact is, I have grown so used to not going to parties, so conditioned to the sequential life of domestic existence, that I just... don't want to go. "Fresher's week will be exiting" they say "There'll be lots of parties" they conclude... but to what end?
that's called a lan party.Walter Slothington said:yes, I go to a few parties, but they just consist of 2 friends and I playing video games
Well hey, you got to see a bunch of idiots in action, giving you plenty to laugh at. And you got some soda and weed out of it. Seems like a good deal.Skeleton Jelly said:Eeeh.
Grade 12er here.
I went to one because one of my old friends that I'm still friends with is popular and wanted me to come.
I went there, and everyone was drunk. The girls were barely wearing anything, and grinding other guys hard enough to god damn give themselves a friction burn.
Upstairs was full of moaning and groaning.
Assholes came up to me saying, "We reallllly need to hang out more."
I saw girls making out with guys and my friend told me they had boyfriends.
I was disgusted, took some soda drinks and weed, then left.
Oh god, i wanted to vommit.
I am currently standing at the threshold of the art scene... the art cinema scene no less, so I shall look forward to more intellectually orientated parties. I'm assuming it's true what they say, the only demonic overlords left in our world work at record labels, haha... Ah well, I can help but imagine the music they play is better than most!BonsaiK said:Looking at parties as an "anthropological experiment" is a good way to experience them without worrying about feeling too out of place. Municipal Waste were cool guys. And gosh, they sure liked Australian beer...
Different types of people throw different parties. Most of the parties I go to are hosted by people in the music industry, and while I despise most of the bigwigs in the music industry, if there's one thing that these parties have in common it's high-quality free food, so I usually go if I'm invited and I'm not being asked to do anything stupid like pay for a table. People in the art scene also throw some awesome parties, the one I described before was an "art scene" party and they're always good because the type of person who goes there is usually a bit more intelligent and thoughtful than the average college dropout, and there's always cool weird shit to look at and talk about.
I have often wondered why I don't have a belly button...hardlymotivated said:Remarkable. You wouldn't happen to be me, would you? Have you ever been involved in a weird cloning experiment?
I love parties, provided their at friends houses with friends, the whole "go to a random's house and meet randoms" thing never appealed to me though, I only socialize with strangers when drunk or surrounded by alot of friends so that kind of party isn't my cup-o-tea. Last party I went to was quite a while ago, compared to you my party invites have gone down on account of friends forced to part ways since university started, at that party I believe I got stupidly drunk and spent the majority of the party vomitting and then sleeping (I didn't use stupidly as an adjective for no reason) though the begining was quite nice with everyone catching up.Mutie said:I am, my fellow escapists, a geek. I have always been a geek. My exam results are relatively low, my common sense is lacking, my knowledge of geek trivia and lore is pitiful... but I am still geek and thus it has always been. As such, my life at Secondary School was horrific; little more than a complex ordeal of social inadequacy and physical strife; I scraped my way through GCSE and A Level with the minimum grades, excitement and friends. I also never went to parties. I was never invited to parties and I never really wanted to go to them anyway. I find large groups of people highly disconcerting, sexual activity somewhat repulsive and alcohol all out abhorrent... so it's rather odd that I lamented my lack of invitation. "Fresher's week will be exiting" they say "There'll be lots of parties" they conclude... but to what end? I do not drink and panic when surrounded by strangers. Am I really expected to endure simply for the sake of social norm? This quandary is compounded somewhat by the fact that I am obsessed with the party life-style; in a very comic-book, mid-eighties kind of way albeit. Municipal Waste and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle preach their party life-style! Bill and Ted salute the excellence of the party but, all this considered, I sit alone once more...
Dearest Escapist; do you party? Do you like parties? What was the last party you went to and what crazy shit happened there?

I was too disgusted to even laugh man lol.TheLaofKazi said:My lord, your vocabulary, like cake with ten times more sugar then needed, is so rich it's disgusting. I feel like I put on a couple of mental pounds just from reading that.
But yeah, I get what you are saying. I'm not too much of a party guy myself. I like the excitement a group of people can bring, I like being weird and energetic, but overall it's the more personal relationship with people that admire, a lot of relationships people have seem so superficial and distant, and it seems like some parties are built around that. Get drunk and loud with people you sort of care about. I haven't really been to one of those stereotypical "beer, sex and loud, shitty music" parties filled with a bunch of people. I've been around those things separately, but not all three at the same time. I would probably enjoy it for a little while though, seeing people act retarded and listen to shitty music is funny. It is especially nice when I experience that kind of stuff with other friends that find it all so stupid to the point where it's hilarious. The closest I get full on parties is concerts, which I go to somewhat frequently.
But I suggest going to one. Why not try something new? Even if it sucks, laugh at how absurd it is. Be adventurous. There's enjoyment to found in every facet of life if you let go of your limited set of expectations of things to make you happy, and open up. Go out and experience things, it doesn't really matter what they are. Just try it, it's something different at least. If you sit inside everyday, skeptically pondering whether or not some activity might be enjoyable to you, you will often be able to find some reasons to object to doing quite a bit of new things, because you still haven't experienced it, you are still biased and uninformed. And if you don't like it, you can always leave.
