Patriotism isn't all bad?

What I like about Scotland:

It's history
It's ability to fry everything
We have learned from our mistakes and don't vote for the conservatives
The scenery, to me the Loch is just an everyday thing but when I see people coming here for a holiday I realise the Loch is better than it seems.

I don't consider myself patriotic by any means and there is a part of me that really doesn't like many aspects of the UK, but one thing I'll agree with you on is about the pubs.

I think being generally apathetic in the UK is our sense of patriotism.

Well no, patriotism on its own isn't bad at all. Neither is any other feeling you get--on its own. It's what action you take based on those feelings that make it "good" or "bad." I consider myself to be a pretty patriotic person when it comes to some things, but I never go around shooting gays or taking out my frustrations on the "unholy Spanish." There is just no excuse for that kind of behavior. Those sorts of people are less "patriotic" and more "bigoted and ignorant."

I know, thats why I put it as a negative thing. Unholdy Spanish was a sarcastic term I was using beacuase I heard about police raiding bars in Texas where a lot of Hispanic immigrants tended to go, as the police where being prejudice.

I've said it before, I think the true patriots are the ones who have issues with their country and make attempts to change it for the common good.

People who consider themselves "patriots" (mostly the gun toting rednecks who tend to be racists) aren't patriots. They're just bigots who've falsely idolized their countries.

I love America. And I'll ***** about everything that's wrong with my country.

There is a difference between patriotism and being nationalitic. The people who are the later take it too far. I enjoy being british, but not so much that I would squander someone who isn't. After all it was just chance that I was born here.

Folks in general find it easy to point fingers at Americans, and stereotype each and every one of them, so I expect folks to get all cranky if anyone is patriotic for the US here. >_o

I think it's a double edged coin. It's great to take pride in your heritage and the heritage of the community you live in, but at the same time it also creates boundaries between other nations who may look down upon something you take pride in. I'm pretty sure it's stuff like this that starts wars.

Then again this will lead to my thoughts on getting rid of all countries and having one nation under the banner of 'Earth'.

Personally I feel that patriotism is like a form of social cancer. It spreads rapidly and starts killing off cells and by cells I mean other races. But like religion, I tolerate it. Because it gives a great many people some form of fulfillment.

I can never exactly be patriotic when it comes to our country, OP. Constantly seeing the kind of complete idiots we churn out as well as the rudeness of a lot of British people, it just keeps me from really loving this country.
