Both the 360 and PS3 were sold at a loss at first. Think 1 bought PS3 even meant a loss of $100 for Sony at first. They wanted to make profit through the games. With the 3DS' release it seems a lot of people are desperate to try and draw attention away from it.
Besides, who buys a Nintendo handheld at launch anyway, they'll have an improved version pushed onto the market within the next year and a half, and then you'll have the choice at a cheaper first gen or the $249 update. Or just not care. Or buy the NGP. Or waste even more money on a girlfriend [/gamestation]
