Okay, this is a slightly irrelevant topic, but hopefully I can get some replies. My situation at the moment is that I'm quite keen to buy some stuff from Ebay, about $450AU worth. Trouble is, I currently don't have a Paypal account, and I can't start to set one up until tomorrow as I need to set some stuff up with my bank account (today is Sunday), and the auctions end tomorrow night.

My question to you guys is, is this possible? Or is there anything I can do to speed up the process? Or am I best to try and find a friend with an account that's feeling generous? Thanks.

You definitely won't be able to set up an account and buy stuff by tomorrow tonight.
I would say either contact the seller and see if he/she is willing for other options, or can reserve the items for a later transaction. Or you can try what you yourself said, and ask one of your friends to help you out.

You usually don't have to pay right away, I think most auctions give you like a week or something unless the seller makes a note. You can bid on the auction, win it, pay when you get paypal set up.

I think this is more the case. You have something like 5 days before you have to send the money.

You need a credit card to back your account, that's the only way for Paypal to be fast...
Indeed...plus its a LOT safer to use a credit card with paypal. That way if someone gets your info and goes on a sopping spree you can get your cash back. If its linked to your direct debit instead...well you're totally fucked then. The bank will essentially tell you "Tough shit it's your fault for being that stupid, it's a valid transaction, it wasn't out money that got lost it was yours, deal with it."

End of story.

A wee bit bitter, are we?

(Man, that is a phonetically fun sentence... Yes, I'm strange, you can shut up now...)
Not bitter no, just tired of hearing about people whining about losing their money because they didn't take the right precautions.
