OT: As for the definition, I'm not sure. I guess my personal definition would be a person who thinks that PC's are a superior gaming platform and that console gamers are lesser gamers for not playing on the 'superior' platform.

My personal take on PC elitism as a whole is that PC elitists are simply attempting to assert their dominance over the consoles because 'they were here first'. The problem is that consoles were specifically made for gaming whereas games are simply another thing PCs do in addition to their other functions. This is somewhat akin to a Swiss Army Knife saying it's better than a machete...

The only thing PCs currently have over consoles are modding capabilities. It used to be modding capabilities and a mouse and keyboard interface (which I find infinitely better for fps games) until SplitFish came out with their line of console mice. http://splitfish.com/index.php/en/products/fragfx-shark

EDIT: Another thing I just thought of, though, is that PC gaming is cheaper in the long run because all you'd really ever need to buy to keep up with the times is a new graphics card every so often and increased RAM even less often than that as opposed to a $300+ console every generation. So perhaps from a monetary standpoint, PC games are better.

"PC Elitist" is just stamped on someone when they mention modifications, it's a sore spot that many console players face. All in all, both sides have a reason to exist. PC for some, console for the other some, it happens. Hey I'm sure there are "truck elitists" or "Heavy Metal elitists" out there so why not talk about them?

Don't even get me started on them. I love the genre, I love meeting fellow metalheads... But the elitists...

The ones I've had experience with are of the belief that metal music isn't metal unless it has 'death', 'black' or something else of the like as part of the genre (death metal, black metal, doom metal) etc, and unless it's Scandinavian. Or European somehow.

American band? Not good enough. Australian? Nope.

I loathe them more than I dislike PC elitists.

I think the problem is in todays current generation things are very console focused which is really pssing off the PC gamers because hardly any games are really optimized for the PC

I get a bit sick of the whole PC elitist thing and "dumbing down" for the consoles

I couldnt care less how complex the button systm is or if it has insanley high graphics or what ever

As this is partly true, optimization is still important for the overall gameplay. GTA4 is a good example, good game, but poorly optimized, I couldn't get a decent frame rate no matter how far I dropped the graphics settings. Dumbing down, as bad as it sounds, is an issue in certain respects especially when certain gameplay elements are removed because of the fact that it was made for consoles in mind as well.

So that is what's ultimately pissing PC gamers off, the fact that elements are removed/changed or unoptimized because of the limited hardware with consoles.

I for one have enjoyed games like DA2 and Crysis 2 despite their shortcomings due to console stream lining, it still sucks, but I enjoy them for what they're worth.

Edit: just wanted to add that I mentioned DA2 and Crysis 2 since they're the games that people are complaining about most as of late for being "Dumbed down" for consoles.

well I guess there is a difference between a really really bad/sloppy port and a game that isnt really optimized

Take saints row 2 a pretty bad port (getting it to look decent slows it down annoyingly so) and yeah it could affect your enjoyment of a game, in my case I was still able to enjoy it

now take Darksiders, its a port no doubt about that but its a port that from a technical persepctive works really well (a little issue with frame rate but hardly anythign to detract from the game) its not really optimized because if it was aiming the frigging cross blade would be easyer, but its more than playable which is A-ok for me

I mean the Idea that some people hate an amazing game like ME2 because its "dumbed down" is just totally effing stupid, it controlls fine, theres hardly anythign noticible that would lead me to belive it was originally intended for consoles (and even if there was I wouldnt care) but noooooooo you cant micro mange your squads gear! *facepalm* I even heard that some PC gamers were angry "because you do everythign with the space bar" as in the controll scheme wasnt difficult enough, but I refuse to belive thats true because no one is that fucking stupid

If the PC itself begins to decline due to smart phones etc, the obvious danger for PC games is that more effort will move into supporting apps for the portable tech. This is highly likely.

The PC is unlikely to decline any further than it has, as just about everybody who was going to jump ship has already done so. Possibly laptops will become the most common form of PC but that's as big a shift as I can see happening anytime in the foreseeable future.

Such a scenario as you present is unlikely to affect PC gamers anyway. What's going to happen? A majority of publishers and developers will stop making the PC their primary development focus and instead foist shitty ports off on the PC? Already happened. Will they stop making shitty PC ports entirely and push their crap elsewhere? Oh... well that would be just terrible... No more wasting money on games that get great reviews but run like arse on gaming build PCs? I dread the day. Buy out The Creative Assembly and force them to make Total War games for the iPhone? HA!

I think the most common definition of a 'PC Elitist' is 'anyone who can name the manufacturer and model of at least 3 components in their prefered gaming platform'... so, most of the PC gamers on this site.

Anyway yeah the OP's definitions are reasonably accurate although it's a little pointless trying to define the phrase PC Elitist in such exact terms.

(And back off topic again) I don't think PC gamers are elitist anymore than console players are drunken frat boys who wouldn't know a good FPS if it shot them in behind. Everyone's different basically and PC gamers can definitely take the piss out of themselves.

A PC elitist is a PC gamer who recognises the multifaceted superiority of their platform and control options over the consoles. That itself isn't really saying much as it's just plain fact. SEcondly a PC elitist will typically lament the retreat of major developers from the PC Platform, sure we still get multiplatform games but the exclusives and the titles that push the boundaries are gone; combined with this the PC elitist will complain about "streamlining" for consoles in multiplatform games which is basically developer speak for ripping out features and dumbing down.

To be Frank, I don't see anything wrong the the PC elitist position, we've been neglected and abused by developers so it's only natural that we react. I'm sure console gamers would be just the same if all their games were multiplatfom with the iPhone for example.

Personally, I've been meaning to get into PC gaming, but Macs are terrible, and I only have a Mac laptop. I'm saving for a gaming desktop.

Onto the subject matter at hand, I've never vested any emotional interest into this dilemma. Games have always been games to me, be they on the PC or on the console. There are only different ways to play them, and I will admit PC gaming has a fair number of advantages over consoles. Is it better? I'd say it's different. The end result is to have some fun and feel a little satisfaction. If there's any similarity between the two, it's that, and based on that I can really care less about which suits my needs. It seems a wee petty to wage a war online about the supposed superiority of either. On top of that, it's largely pointless. What will this accomplish?

People love certainty and they love things that support that certainty. Often times they'd rather believe the lie they already believed to be true than the truth they believed to be false. Religion, Politics, gaming debates, it doesn't matter. Most of the time people won't change their minds because of evidence or reason.

Maybe you can objectively prove that the PC is superior, but it's irrelevant. What matters is that a lot of people use consoles, and are used to consoles, so anyone who thinks differently must have something wrong with them.

Pretty much right! I'm sure some anti-biotics would help those poor console users. I don't like them touching my PC. If they need to use it, they must wash first and put on latex gloves.
