I'm trying to transfer some music and video files (from my iTunes) from an old PC to a new one. I was going to use an external Hard Drive to do the transfer, however, the old PC has a virus in it. Will the virus also transfer itself over?

Depends on the virus, is it an old virus? If so you should be alright, the virus will likely be in C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 so don't take any files from in there! If its a new virus it might be one of the clever ones that copies itself to any external media. Theres a nasty one doing the rounds on USB sticks at the moment

Depends on the virus, a virus is a very broad term, i cannot tell you for sure without knowing the class of virus.

Although usually, a standard virus only infects the host computer, generally inside the system32 folder, and does not latch on to files that are being transferred.

Although as I said, some do.

Should be fine, my advice is to scan your computer first if you're the worried. Try and make as little room for error as possible.

Also, Accretia ftw.

hmmm it looks like it's only doing shit to my C:\ since I can't access it. Also I'm having no problems running my PC otherwise... I was able to start COD 4 and my Steam games no problem today (minus the fact that I needed the CD's autorun to do it since I also can't access my "Programs" list from the Start Menu). I WAS able to put all my music and videos into a folder on my Desktop called "External shit" so that I can just grab it and go. As far as the type of Virus... I'm not quite sure... Anyone have a checklist or something that I can go through to help Identify it?

-edit-

If I install an antivirus on the destination PC (My new one), will it protect it from anything that could have possibly jumped into my External Drive when I plug it in?

That should do the trick. AVG free is a good antivirus, you could always try installing Spyware Doctor on the old PC too, it might get the virus out.
