So I'm not actually wanting to discuss the death of PC gaming or that whole can of worms, though I can mention that I in no way think the PC as a platform is dying.

What I want to talk about are older games that seems to, somehow, still be going! Did dust off one of your old favorites, start it up and to your surprise find that people are still playing it? Please share your tales of games that you thought were dead who turned out not to be!

I started up Battlefield 2142 the other day for the first time in 5 years, and I did NOT expect to find it still going with even a couple of servers full! It was never the most popular in the Battlefield series, but it was and still is my favorite of them all.

You know what I also did the other day?

I played TF2. Game is like 6 years old and it still has servers up.

I'm trying to understand your post here OP.

There are plenty of old games with a loyal fanbase that keeps up the servers and general interest of old games.

The point is to start a conversation, probably. Doesn't matter if it's inane.

On another note I'd love to see if C&C Generals' servers are up. I played the frack out of that game and I still love it to this day. It must be 10 years old now, wow. And still, the multiplayer was amazing, you had tower defence maps, unlimited $$$ unit spam, no $ limited start, or campaign maps. I must have played through 100+ hours, and it's still quite exciting, if only my computer weren't incompatible now.

OOOEEY i THREAD perfect for my favorite game! I started playing this game in 2008. The game has been around since 1997. The servers went down in 2001 and since then the community has been running it ever since.

Currently to my knowledge the myth world cup is the longest running tournament ever for a video game. This year there are 8 teams competing and below ive provided a video of how the game is played. This is this years tournament game-play using the 1.8 zoom feature and re-rendered textures (All community done).

In the video you can see the blinking yellow dots on the minimap. They are the flags, and the objective for this map type (there are 9 different types of objectives) is Territories so basically at the end of the time whoever owns the most flags wins Or the enemy is totally wiped out.

Oh and its probably the most diverse range of players ranging from Ukraine, Australia, Italy, Brasil, Japan, UK, States, Afganistan, Poland the list goes on.

Anyway this was the perfect thread to spill my guts on my most favorite game, and I suggest you all play it if you have not already!

Yes, but TF2 never really went away, it wasn't replaced by something else and is still being officially supported. There are of course plenty of old games that are still going and still popular, just look at Counter-Strike 1.6! World of Warcraft is about 9 years old now, and STILL the jugernaut of the MMORPG scene.

I was kinda wanting to talk about games you DIDN'T expect to still be alive... Games you haven't even thought about in ages, and that seems to have faded from collective memory, but still seems to be soldiering on.

I played that game from 1997 to 2007. I even partook in the MWC myself. Still, the drama that such a community breeds does get tiresome. I quit because after ten years there finally were nothing left to pull me back.
Still, Marius.Net, the most prominent server after Bungie pulled out, was nicely crafted.

..I don't remember any of the names from the Video, but hey, people change handles from time tot ime.

I'm replaying Doom right now, onto Episode 3, with the Brutal Doom mod which has an update out in a month or two. Excellent new animations, kicking, taunts, gore, gib physics etc.

I'm not sure cause the last time I tried was a few years ago, but I THINK people might actually still play the Halo:CE PC demo.

The Neverwinter Nights series continues to be a regular mainstay on my PC, with new modules and campaign still being released semi-regularly and often of such high quality it's easy to forget these are just fan-made products and not official ones. Hard to believe the original Neverwinter Nights is around 11 years old and the second around 7... well, except for the visuals, those make it very easy to believe the games age.

The original Unreal Tournament is still quite active. I sometimes pop in for a game, but the average skill level is so far above my own by this point that it's hard to get into.

Ok, here's a messed up one. The multiplayer demo for Medal of Honor: Allied Assault's "Spearhead" expansion pack still had players the last time I popped in for nostalgia. What a wicked ride it's been 2002-2011 and for all I know to this day.

There is now a new server called Gate of Storms that people now play on. Marius.net exists now but because of the lack of support for players everyone has moved onto the new server. This new server has a feature that you can watch any films (even ones you have not played in. inside a database located on the website. It makes it perfect for tournaments trying to find lost saved films and you dont have to save recordings ect or load loose files to the web.

Website is here http://www.gateofstorms.net/

Oh and yes the community is full of those players, but then again what competitive game is not full of immature players. Cod, Starcraft, CSS they all have them as well. At least the community's player age on average is late twenties early thirties which gives a bit more maturity for the most part.

I play lots of older games quite often, I'm currently working through Deus Ex: Invisible War, I've played Oni in the last 6 months fired up some of the King's Quest games for a bit, tinkered with the free version of Shadow Warrior that was on Steam a while back. I went through Doom 3 and RoE not that long ago because I'd never finished RoE when it was new. In fact, outside of a handful of really simple indie games I don't play ANYTHING new on the PC because my machine is nearly 10 years old and in serious need of an upgrade, unemployment sucks folks, don't let it become a habit.

Hopefully now that I've actually got a job I'll be able to save up some money and build a new rig then clear out my backlog in decent quality before buying some new stuff.
