Ok people, I'm writing down a list here, keep them coming. The rarer and more unheard of the better, because I already have many games (Over 200 actually :p). The games can be as old as you like, as long as they come from the CD/DVD era, no floppy's.
You asked for it.
Dawn of war 1 (you probably already have that), Starship Titanic (if you like P&C adventures AND Douglas Adams), Unreal Tournament (any of them; damn, we gamers used to get all sorts of free stuff), Xwing vs Tie Fighter, Secret Wives' Club, and yes any of the GTAs (though my favorite is San Andreas, all of them are better on the pc).

Fallout 1/2, Heart of Darkness, also check Silent Hill, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid (even though those console ports could have been better, they're fine - at least as long as you have a gamepad :S) Command & Conquer, You don't know Jack (for fucks sake, how could I have forgotten about this game). I'll come up with more ideas.

Edit: Quake 3 Team Arena. Need to get this one again, too - check out the modding community, it's incredible.

Neverwinter Nights is the best. The first game + add-ons, not the sequel.

You could try to play some old Point n' click games.

It can be a bit fiddly working around with Emulators, but once they're running, the old Point N' Click games can be awesome.

Try ScummVM with Beneath a Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, Flight of the Amazon Queen, and Drascula. I'm pretty sure all of this software can be aquired legally, for free.

There are however more naughty ways to get free games ;D

I feel your pain. My computer can barely run Lost Planet on the lowest resolution.

Anyway, Warcraft III is a good option. I don't even like strategy but some of the custom games on battle.net are incredibly fun. It would be wise to get the expansion pack (Frozen Throne) with it as well.

Here's a little list of pre-2006 games I love:
- Half Life 1 and 2
- Starcraft-
- Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne (and all the previous Warcraft installments)
- Max Payne
- Red Alert 1/2
- Fallout 1/2
- Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
- Rollercoaster Tycoon 1/2
- Planescape: Torment
- Diablo 1/2
- Dungeon Siege 1/2
- Age of Empires 1/2/3 + expansions (I still prefer 2 with the expansion above all else)
- Monkey Island games (not sure how many there are of them, I just know I especially loved 2)
- Worms games (2 wins again)
- Unreal Tournament 99 (no, there are no other UT games, just Battlefield-like abominations, I don't consider those UT games)
- Quake games (I guess all of them, except Enemy Territory)
- Theme Hospital
- The Sims 1/2
- Simcity/2000/3000/4

I really could go on like that for a while. That list contains shooters, RTS, building sims, RPG's, hack&slash. All in all, plenty of stuff to keep you going.
