System Shock 2. Fallout. Imperatives of PC gaming.

Now, if you're willing, and if you don't mind paying at least sixty dollars for a force-feedback steering wheel, pick up just about anything by SimBin Studios. They make just about the best racing simulators on the market, and everybody knows that, short of Gran Turismo, only the PC has any "real" racing titles for it.
Actually an X-Box 360 controller works surprisingly well for PC racing games. I've been using one ever since my G-25 went tits-up on me.

So, if you have an SLI setup with two 768-mb-of-RAM cards, how much RAM would your OS recognize if you had 4 gigs of RAM and it was a 32 bit OS?
About 2464 mb.
Thank you, PersianLlama- I've always been curious about that....

Now, Spartan Bannana, I also recommend The Witcher- it has a wonderful story, as well as a very badass protagonist... But it is an rpg, so maybe you'd like it, maybe not. If you do get the game, though, get the Enhanced Edition.
Your Welcome, and yar The Witcher kicks ass, I'm just too broke to afford the Enhanced Edition :( (I have the original, but I wants the extras)
Wasn't the original version going to get a download of some sort to make it the same as the enhanced edition?

It has. All you need to do is register your game online, then go here: http://www.thewitcher.com/community/en/www/installation_of_twee_in_four_easy_steps.html and follow the steps on that page.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, here's my current list of incumbents:
STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl
The Valve Steam Pack
Far Cry 2
Oblivion
Maybe Morrowind
Orange Box(if it doesn't come with the steam pack)
Civ 4
Oh- I recently found an oldie but a goodie:
Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines.......... It's an action rpg about being a vampire in Los Angeles, and it has some *incredible* characters.
Seriously, you should get it- it also has one of the best storylines I've seen for a long time. Its graphics are decent, considering it was made in 2004, and the atmosphere is very immersive.

Well, if you like RTS's (I know some mutants don't) you can't go far wrong with the Dawn Of War lot. I recommend getting the original and first 2 expansions bundle. If you have Vista some jiggery pokery may be necessary though i.e. needing to download a specific file for them to run. It's all directX9's fault.

Also Evil Genius is super fun.

Yeah.

Don't.

To learn how to suggest a game for review on ZP, watch the beginning of his CoD4 review.

I'm surprised nobodies mentioned Deus Ex series yet
Oh yeah- the Deus Ex series. Get it, too.... As well as the "Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines" game that I mentioned earlier.

Both of those series are similar; it's just that one's about a nano-augmented supersoldier and the other is about a vampire. Both of them involve back-stabbing and intrigue out the wazoo, which makes all of them quite good games (although my favorite would have to be the original Deus Ex, followed by the aforementioned vampire game, then Invisible War)

Do not... I repeat... Do not buy games that are console ports. Learn this now before you make the mistake. Only buy games that are developed for PC and primarily for PC. If you get a port, you get a poorly made, unoptimized, stutter fest with tons of glitches that simply don't get patched.
I used to be absolutely convinced of this, but as of late, things seem to be looking up. Off the top of my head, the PC versions of Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed are quite excellent, Mass Effect being noticably better on PC. You still need to be careful about your ports (Gears of War), but the console port business isn't nearly as bleak as it used to be.

Of course, this is probably a moot point anyways, because he's coming from console gaming, which means any games that would be ported to the PC he'd already have available on the console.

Oh, and if you like RPGs, The Witcher is definitely a very good game. Go for the enhanced edition on Steam. They re-recorded all the dialogue, and it makes all the difference in the world.

Yeah, the PC port of Mass Effect was good, better than the console versions even. You can't automatically shitcan all console ports.

I'll try to recommend a wide variety of games that you would enjoy. Some of these games are rather old, but they are all fantastic and they truly show some of the best aspects of their genre.

Freespace / Freespace 2 - Both of these games are simply stunning. If you have a joystick it is even better. But for a space sim, it's not that bad if you don't have a joystick.
Oh man, me being a space-sim fan, how could I forget these? Have to agree with Superfriend here. These are two, admittedly old, but amazing titles worth picking up.

5 gigs of RAM...Are you running a 64-bit OS?
Like I said, I'm a newb at PC gaming, I don't really have a gigantic computer that sucks out people's souls through it's disc drive, I'll upgrade later, I CAN run STALKER, the recommended RAM for that game is 1 gig, and my system meets the other requirements, so I'll be fine, and all you PC gamers, please don't kill me, I'll upgrade after I get suggestions okay?
Actually, that's not what they meant. They meant that you did major overkill on your RAM. I'm not sure that you are even right about how much ram you have. I've seen people put four GB of RAM in a computer for 64 bit Windows but not five GB. 64 Bit Windows is a higher level of Windows than 32 bit (which is what the majority of people are running). 32 Bit Windows will not even use more than 2 GB of RAM, so unless you are running 64 Bit Windows, those extra 3 GB are not even being used. If you can, I'd return the extra three GB of RAM to whoever you bought them from and use the money you spent on them for a really good video card.
