I think the problem is due to alpha protocol's crazy ass controls.
Honestly OP, if you want to use a controller go ahead and use one.

Yeah...this. I can't remember exactly what was up with them, but I remember there was a serious period of UI shock when I started playing that game. It felt really cumbersome, and not at all like a traditional shooter. It takes some getting used to.

Long time console (And handheld) gamer here, but a noob to PC. I seem to have a run into a problem.

So, I bought Alpha Protocol the other day for $2 on Steam because I like RPG's and I thoroughly enjoyed the developer's (Obsidian) latest game, Fallout: New Vegas. I wasn't really enjoying it though. It was incredibly difficult for me to play with the keyboard and mouse set up, I've only played a couple of other games like this and wasn't to hard with them (Portal and Star Wars: Dark Forces), but with this I'm struggling to aim and shoot, to remember exactly what each key does, to move my character without looking like a moron, etc.

I guess my computer might be making the game run slower or something since it's a laptop with integrated graphics, but Portal looked fine on my system and when I ran it just to check, Oblivion worked fine. Should I invest in a wired 360 controller just for laptop in order to play games with my preferred control settings? Or maybe I should avoid playing anything slightly new because it isn't going to run well on my computer? Fallout: New Vegas seemed to run, but never played it because I have the 360 version, should I maybe try something I'm used to like it or Oblivion to get a better feel for PC controls as opposed to console ones?

Sorry, if this post is rambly, I'm bad at explaining problems...
There are some things that naturally work better on a joypad due to the increased accessibility of buttons in a smaller, easier to navigate area. Things like Assassins Creed, Resident Evil etc do better on this. First Person Shooters such as Battlefield 3 and RTS like C&C or SC will do better with a mouse and keyboard where accurate clicking and myriad controls are more favoured. Your issue isn't isolated to just you, we all have known this tension and the trick is to simply know the boundaries.

If you're set on using your PC for AP, then maybe get your XBox controller hooked up.

Make sure you're using the pistols the right way. You have to keep the reticule on your target for a second before you shoot.

AP has some really shitty PC controls. The hacking introduction took me, no joke, about 50 tries because of that damn mouse.

Thanks guys, I didn't think my computer sucked THAT bad, the controls for this one game in particular seem to be bugging me. I'll just make sure I have a controller for my PC before trying it again. Like I said, I need one for other games anyway. Maybe then it will be a bit more accessible...
