Gaming is evolving. And no amount of denial on the part of PC gamers is gonna improve their situation.
I don't even have to read this thread properly to wager a guess at the general opinion... ohh, doesn't like PC gaming anymore, he musn't be good with PC's, console gaming is horrible, I can herp a derp with a keyboard and mouse, like some antique from the fricken jet age, because the interwebs tells me that's leet.
Gaming is evolving, and some gamers are still banging on about PC gaming, as if it's even a contender. The PC gets an embarrasingly low amount of sales, less than 10% of console sales - it's the ugly little stepchild of the gaming industry, accept it, deal with it, move on.
The PC will become more of a niche, still the top platform for MMO and strategy games, still good for indi games - but the big titles are going to stop appearing on PC, the costs of producing a game rise all the time, soon the PC port that PC gamers complain about will be nothing more than an inconvenience. PC gamers, go buy a 360 or PS3, and utilise your PC for more unique games, use your PC for more than just gaming. It's the only sensible option but there are a lot of options out there - like learning to mod your favorite games. PC gaming has to support itself as a platform, PC gamers have to stop snivelling and trolling, and appreciate the smaller companies that support the PC.
Now trolls feel free to regurgitate that usual 'him know nothing' response, I've been a gamer since before I can remember, I write games, and I am an IT engineer (have been for about 16 years). I still use a PC for gaming, but it's different games - like Minecraft for instance. I use a console for the big titles, and keep my PC clean a fresh for indi games, game development, and the occasional hardcore shooter, like Killing Floor or BFP4F.
PC gamers need to stop banging on about the keyboard and mouse as well... digital straffe is just as bad as any woes you'd experience on a controller - controllers and mice both have their benefits and issues, neither is better or worse, it depends on the game and how or where you want to play.
As a side note, I don't know anyone with the PC version of Skyrim who hasn't drained any challenge out of it. At least with console games you don't have 'console' commands to save your neck every time, it keeps games challenging and maintains that sense of achievement when you do struggle through.
Hilarious post. And you have the nerve to call the people that dismiss this bullshit trolls.
Don't even know where to begin.
Objectively speaking, mouse + KB is best for every other game out there except sport sims, racing games and beat-em ups. Since it is best for most games out there, it is superior. Why do you think PS3 has mouse and kb support?
Yeah gaming is evolving and consoles will finally catch up techwise once they release the new generation. Are you actually telling me that selling more dumbed down products(doesn't mean that they're bad some like dark souls/shadow of the collossus are great) for a cheaper price with tech from five years ago is evolving the industry? Yeah, I'm sure the companies are making more money but what's the point if most games coming out for consoles are mediocre brown shooters. This spells STAGNATION. I play MW3 and Battlefield 3 and I'm at a loss at how anyone can like this crap. If you've ever played a doom, quake, unreal tournament you'll know what I'm talking about. Even yahtzee, a console enthusiast, complains about the dumbed down nature of these games.
You are right about the niche nature of PC gaming(with 10% sales and such) but have you asked yourself why this is? It's because PC gamers are treated not even like second grade citizens in the industry, but third or fourth. Why develop for more complex machines when you can do so for machines with one sole configuration? Most developers don't even put out decent PC games, they just do ports and thus we have to suffer through the console's limitations even on our machines. I played Driver San Francisco(a good game) on my PC and the textures looked like something from early 2000's, it was kinda embarrassing considering that we are in 2011. When developers do give a damn about PC gamers, their product will be bought, best example is Witcher 2, which has surpassed one million copies easily and we are talking about ONE PLATFORM(and one on which supposedly everything is pirated). The developers showed respect to the community(free dlc to name just one thing) and the community gave back. What respect should I show companies that don't even port their games properly or give me some bullshit drm like Ubisoft's genius idea in AC 2(to be connected to the internet constantly in order to play)?
We are niche because we are being treated as niche.
It's funny that you should talk about Skyrim cause this game represents this whole niche thing I was talking about beautifully. A lot of PC gamers bought the megahyped Skyrim. After the install many gamers saw that the game crashed on their pc's, even new pc's. Go to the internet and see the soundfix. Once in the game I see that the textures are real ugly up close. The game is fun, no doubt about that but it crashed once I fast travel and I have a pretty hefty machine with everything up to date. Again, a trip to the internet and I found out about Skyrim's memory leaks and the fact that, in this day and age, it used no more than 2 GB of ram. Now that is just pissing on the gamers themselves.
In the first weeks since Skyrim's release, the modding community had to fix the memory leaks, give the game actual 2011 textures, better skins, better controls, better shaders, the ability to use more than 2 GB of ram, the ability to tweak the game graphically(options that are standard in pc gaming since at least 10 years ago). Skyrim is now a much much better product on the pc and no thanks to Bethesda. Now I ask you, why couldn't Bethesda give us this game from the get go? Simple answer: because it didn't care, it was too busy pandering to the console crowd. I bought Skyrim, I enjoyed it but on the pc it could have been so much more. It's a shame that as pc gamers we have to fix the damn games we buy and we're not talking about a indie game here.
You talk about challenge in Skyrim and how pc gamers abused the console commands. Skyrim has very few challenging moments. I clocked around 100 hours on it and I played on MASTER, yet I died only against a few challenging foes. The game is pretty damn easy when playing on standard difficulty and becomes incredibly easy to abuse(see examples online if you don't believe me, with builds that can wreck even powerful foes in 1-2 hits). I do know one thing about the pc version, I can use the console to move quests forward when the inevitable Bethesda bugs show up. Can you?
