Team Fortress 2 has been good to me since my switch to PC gaming. In fact, it's the reason why I tried out PC gaming. Terrific FPS multiplayer with fun humor and terrific community. You should try it!
Just get the Orange Box. Everyone has already said so, but TF2 has caused me so much rage.

(Also if you get the Orange Box download Modular Combat and add me on steam. My steam names my escapist name too.

I'm not genre-bound--if you think it's a good game, let me know about it.

If you want a crash course to PC gaming, go get some of the following: Orange Box, Baldurs gate, Deux Ex, Homeworlds, Sins of a Solar Empire, Daggerfall/Morrowind, Civ 4, BattleFeild 2, Starcraft, Diablo 2,Warcraft 3, X-COM series (on steam for like a $1) Company of Heroes, Freelancer and your pick of a random European developed RPG that doesn't suck (risen/gothic/the witcher).

Their all represent something pretty unique and distinctive about PC gaming not found on consoles, and have their own community styles and demographics. All of them have aged very well, and remain very playable. The only real exception is possibly the first X-com and Dagger fall. It isn't a inclusive list, but since you haven't specified any particular genre, they are all games with relatively broad appeal. If you like something from that list, go deeper.

Their isn't too many modern stuff on the list because for the majority of them, they all have relatively equivalent console versions anyway. Otherwise, if not, their heavily derived formulas set up in these previously mentioned games, and don't surpass the original in any way except graphics.
Daggerfalls free too, but you need an emulator and it's just so damn ugly. Sadly it's only the second reason that I'm not getting it.

Combat Arms is good free fun.

This is fantastic--you're going to keep me busy. Some titles I'm seeing coming up multiple times, those are going to have to be top of the list.

Okay, so, I'm a console gamer. Hi. I'm about to get a brand spanking new desktop and would like to branch out into PC gaming. Could you recommend a game, with a brief review or rating out of 5? No muhmorpergers, please.
I've clocked a few hours in L4D2. If you played L4D on console then you notice what a God send the mouse is.

Well, TF2 is good fun. I'd recommend starting with one of PC gamings strengths, that being the RTS. World In Conflict is a great place to start.

After that, perhaps Dawn Of War. RPGs are great too, perhaps you should try Fallout? You can get the first 2 Fallouts and Fallout tactics in the Fallout collection for about ?14.99. Difficult as fuck, but a great introduction to PC gaming.
To be honest, World in Conflict probably isn't the best place to being RTSing, though it is a different style you should try at some point. Dawn of war is interesting, though in the end that boils down to just who dominates resources. For a good RTS that has been time tested, play starcraft and warcraft III. As everyone has heard of world of warcraft, you may think they're just some crappy sell outs, in which case you're wrong as these came along before frostmourne ate blizzards soul, but released enough to get them to release starcraft 2. They're genuinely great RTS's and involve good resource manangement, mircoing, and marcoing.

Some non-RTS's to look into in case you haven't played them on consoles are: Psychonaughts (Old but a great example of what a game designer with independent thought could do), Left 4 Dead, Dragon Age: Origins (and most of biowares other titles) and just FPS's in general as (IMO) FPS's are better handled by a mouse than a joystick.

I like the Mass effect games and Day of Defeat Source. On another note, get Steam, it's free and a very good way to manage your games.

Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 1/2, Company of Heroes, Dragon Age: Origins, and BioShock 1/2.

That should hold you over for a while.

Yeah, thats why dagger fall was among the few I suggested an alternative, its sequel, which graphics are nice and 3d and not pixelated, at least. Morrowwinds worse, but it isn't hugely worse, and Daggerfall is probably pretty unplayable in this day and age.

Dead Space is awesome fun, slightly terrifying, and quite cheap. It's also on 360, but if your new PC is a beast, then it'll look better on PC.
