PC Headset Mic, Please Help!

Okay, I have looked and looked (perhaps not enough) and I thought I would bring this to you wise escapists.

I currently have a headset microphone and headphones for Left 4 Dead. The headphones work fine, but the microphone does not. It doesn't seem to show up anywhere and obviously does not pick up any sound. I am using windows vista and have heard that many people using vista have had the same problem, also I am using SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio, and I have tried downloading past drivers, but the computer wont accept them as it says the ones I am using are the most recent.

Do any other vista users have this same problem? Can anyone help?

i have the same sound setup (btw, are you using a ASUS crosshair mainboard?)
and trying different audioports did the trick for me, it worked for me at the rear audio output,

also you might need to enable "microphone boost" in vista's sound settings.

btw, dont try drivers, they'll get you nowhere.
vista has a nice support for sound systems up to 7.1
just fiddle around with the recording/sound/speaker setup settings if it doesnt work

ah man it works now! Your a leg end, microphone boost did it! time for some speech recognition...
