As this is very relevant to gaming, I thought I'd post this here.
My computer CD drive isn't recognising it when I insert games.
At first I thought there was something wrong with the disk drive in general but it recognises regular music cds no problem and with no delay whatsoever, it came up in iTunes with the "rip cd" page straight away when I inserted a music cd, but it doesn't recognise any of my games saying that the drive is empty.
Anyone know what I can do about this?
I did update all my drivers recently to see if it would improve my computer and I believe it was directly after this that my problem arose? Is this likely to be the cause? and if so what can I do to fix it?

Which OS are you using? I've found an article [http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321641] to help troubleshoot if you're using XP.

This may sound stupid, if so ignore it, but could it be that you're trying to use your CD drive for a DVD?

It was working fine until the other day so I severly doubt this is the case.

Ok, I know this is a stupid question, but coming from an IT field, I've had this happen before. Is it a CD-R or is it a DVD-R, or is it a combo drive? Secondly, if it normally DOES read those discs....how old is the drive (how long have you had it in your P). Thirdly, do you burn music/dvd's with it often?

Basically, I've had it happen before on a drive that was particularly aged, and it basically was the precursor for the death of the drive itself. This, however, was a drive that I'd among other things, burned 100 CD's over the course of a weekend, and was about 5 years old to boot. Optical drives can have a short lifespan if they're used with great frequency.

I would understand this but the computer I'm using is quite new, a couple of months at most and I have yet to burn a CD on it.

On further inspection my drive is reading CDs but not DVDs, as I tested it using a dvd film.
However as it proclaims itself it is a DVD RW drive.
Anyone know what can cause a drive to read CDs but not DVDs?

I have the same thing. My CD/DVD drive doesn't read music CDs. Read game CDs and DVDs perfectly though.

My best guess would be a driver problem. Find out the make and manufacture of the DVD drive and search for the correct drivers. Install the drivers (the most recent first) until it works again.

The symptoms are entirely different, so what makes you think it is the same thing?

In OP's case, it's worth checking and reinstalling drivers, but it could be that the DVD-specific hardware (read/write head) is broken.

In your case, did your drive ever read music CD's, or did it stop working? Have you tried any music CDs that do not contain any DRM? (To be sure of this, you can burn your own music CD.)

They're similar! Both involve CDs and DVDs.

It used to read CDs. Now none.
