PC Mod Returns The Pretty To Liberty City

It's been three years since Grand Theft Auto IV hit retail shelves, yet thanks to a new modification, the virtual sandbox has never looked better.

Specifically, I'm speaking of the iCEnhancer mod, and as you can see in the attached image and footage below, it brings a host of graphical improvements to the not-as-pretty-as-you-remember GTAIV engine. Most intriguing are the new higher resolution textures, cloudy weather effects and improved reflections.

The downside is that the mod doesn't play well with the latest version of Grand Theft Auto IV. As the ReadMe states, "It works perfectly on 1.0.4.0 GTA 4 PATCH. It works horribly on 1.0.6.0/1.0.7.0 PATCH." By "horribly," the creator means "could overheat and damage your videocard."

Alright, so the risk of melted silicon is a bit of a downer, but before you protectively clutch your nVidia hardware to your chest like a mother bird with inexplicably dextrous wings, take a look at how much better the world of Liberty City looks within the mod:

And for comparison's sake, here's how Grand Theft Auto IV normally looks (warning: clip contains violence and comic mischief, whatever that is):

See the improvement?

If you've suddenly got a desire to shoot up faux-New York again, you can download the latest version of the iCEnhancer mod from GTAGaming [http://www.gtagaming.com/downloads/gta-iv/misc-mods/9236].

Sooooooooooooooo much better than the dark, murky, brown, and generally darkish-muddish-brownish visuals of GTA4. If only I had the hardware to run it...

Melt the video card? Hell that would melt my laptop into a pool of goop...

Looks amazing though, much better than the dark, murky GTA4 we all know of.

Wish I could run that mod. It really breathes new life into LC.

Why? Rockstar will probably make that one just as dull and muddy as 4.

I did try this. And for me it actually runs BETTER on the newest version of GTA IV. Also my GFX card only reaches around 66C, which is actually less than playing Counter Strike Source. So win win overall!

The GTA games have never been about graphics, every single one has had subpar graphics compared to their contemporaries, which I love because they spend more of their time crafting the actual "game" part of the game, unlike too many other devs that do the opposite.

Holy shit! COLOR! Actual color! I in a video game!

Do you need a $4,000 rig though?

Also, PC master race modding, fuck yea!

Pretty much what I was thinking. Didn't a lot of people have trouble upping the original game to high settings to begin with, haha?

You call GTA IV a game? I was bored as hell playing it, answering the damn phone all the time with that side crap.

I'll take Saints Row 2 any day of the week. Silly, over the top, and with colors.
