After my previous thread I managed to get my new PC working by installing Windows 8 and using a ethernet cable to download 1.1 Gb worth of updates.

Everything went well for the most part.

...Until two days ago.

The screen shuts off the instant I turn the PC on. After about 2 seconds of the tower powering on or being plugged into the monitor the monitor switches off as if the PC is hibernating. The monitor does detect the connection, but it doesn't display anything and just switches off. As you can imagine I can't acess the desktop or BIOS at all, all I've been able to do is look at the connections for any faults.

I checked the Graphics Card, RAM and Motherboard for any connection faults, Power cycled the tower, reset the CMOS battery and nothing has worked. I'm on the verge of bringing it to a local shop to see if they can check if any of the parts are damaged/faulty.

Motherboard: Asus Z87-PRO
CPU: Intel Core i7
Graphics Card: Asus GTX-770
OS: Windows 8

Captcha: Mickey Firm. Is this foreshadowing?

If everything is properly put together then the only explanation is a faulty component. Unfortunately without replacement components to test with there's not much way to work out where the fault is since it could be a number of things. Try taking out everything except the board, CPU, RAM and PSU and see if you get anything. If not you might just have to take it in.

I think this probably the wisest thing to do really, everything was bought back in Janurary so it should all be in warranty then.

Bumping this until others get a good look at your issue.

I ask this simply as a matter of clarification as I'm nowhere nearly as informed as people like Snowy, but when you say your monitor shuts off, you mean just the monitor, correct? Your PC is still running? You can hear your fans running and the power light or HDD indicator are still on?

Did you happen to buy a motherboard with on-board video capabilities?

...

I did some searching and I think this is the motherboard you bought, correct?
ASUS Z87-PRO [http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131979]

It's interesting how it has on-board DVI-D and VGA. Didn't you say you bought a discrete video card? Are you perhaps plugged into one of the on-board video ports by accident?

Yep, as far as I can tell everything else is working.

I tried plugging the hdmi into the motherboard's slot but no change. Though it could be that I didn't install the drivers yet.

Not having the drivers will not matter, the screen should show the boot up sequence regardless of windows drivers. Try pulling out the graphics card and then starting up with the HDMI cable plugged into the motherboard.

I did, and the tech shop tested it with VGA. No change, so it's the motherboard then.

At this point the only thing we can say is that it isnt the graphics card. If there is problem with, say the memory, it will still prevent you machine from booting whatever the video source is.

Well there's no way I can determine if anything else is at fault with what I have to hand. Since everyone else I've asked says it's the motherboard I'll just contact Asus. Luckily it's under Warranty.
