PC RPG recommendations please

Since everyone has recommended plenty of RPGs, I suggest getting Penumbra and Amnesia. Great horror games from a company that needs our support 
I'd like to voice my support for NWN2. Buggy though Obsidian's games may be, they did an excellent job of creating believable characters and give you multiple ways to go through a game. Being either a straight up jackass or full on pure white knight isn't recommended. You'll get your ass kicked.Exterminas said:
If you want to go oldskool, try Wizardry 8. its an awesome game that utilizes a few pretty unique features, such as a 1-7 selectable power level for all spells, enemy skins which become increasingly bloody as you beat the S&%* out of them (i'm suprised more games don't have this these days), and one of the best stat/skill systems I have ever seen in a game. some of its features have become pretty dated, and the graphics can at best be described as 'horrid', but it still remains a favorite of me and my bro.
If you want to go reallly oldskool, try Wizardry's 1-7. Wizardry was one of the original CRPG's, pioneered the first person perspective in video games, and is also insanely difficult. but if you want to play a little bit of gaming history, give it (or any of the wizardry series) a try.

It's only the second game that introduced more rpg and character buliding elements.
In the first game you just acquire upgrades for your implant and there's no penalty for death (if you deactivate the cyborg conversion chambers).
Don't get me wrong, I love system shock (more than 2) but I can't really call it an rpg.
Still he should play it though. If anyone needs a version that will run with minimum fuss on both xp and windows 7 PM me.
-edit- Also... why has no-one said Jade Empire? That's like the best game Bioware has developed. So much crazy fun. So more enjoyable than mass effect.
It is important zu remember that "RPG" is a really diverse genre. So many games that are considered RPGs by some people, will be First-person-shooter for others. See System shock or Deus Ex.
Also you have to decide for yourself which of these you prefer. I for one never liked Mass Effect or Dragon Age, because I played Kotor and if you played these, you don't need to play the newer BioWare games. Why? Because the strong side of these games have been the characters, while the gameplay itself often fell short. Only problem is: The characters are always the same. There was pretty accuarte Stolen Pixels comic about that problem, if you want to know the details.
Then there is the scale of action-based-Rpgs vs. dialogue-based. Even in Deus Ex 2, which is considered the weaker one of the games, by many people, you could solve many quests without killing someone or spend most of the time talking and walking. If I remember rigth you could play through that game with killing only one person.
An action-oriented title like Oblivion doesn't work that way. But is an Rpg nontherless.
Because, in the End, a Roleplaying Game is a Game that allows you to play a very specific role. And that pretty much true for all of these games. (As opposed to games like Starcraft where you just play some bodyless force that makes puppets dance)

Go for it), an open world, and some hilarious dialogue ("The sailor is understandably angry that you have barged into his room. Bioshock, both Mass Effects and Dragon Age are avalable on Steam. And most game stores have a copy of Diablo 2 floating around.
(also if you do get Dragon Age, get the ultimate edition which has all the DLC and the expansion included)
