PCs: Upgrading vs. Getting a new one?

To go back on-topic...

Personally, I buy whole new computers. I buy something pretty beastly that will last me a long time, and when it starts to get old, I buy a whole new setup. Except RAM, because it's cheap and you can just shove it in there.

I suppose it depends on how often you upgrade. If you buy a new upgrade every few months, that's probably fine - you want to remain top of the line, and since you upgrade so often, stuff will most likely remain compatible. If you have mostly new stuff in your computer, you can probably get away with upgrading your motherboard and still have compatibility with them.

I try to get something good, though, that will last. I bought the computer I'm using now about two years ago, and I can still play all the new games on the highest settings, which is all I care about. I don't do heavy image- or movie-editing or such, and everything I do aside from gaming could technically be done on a netbook... So as long as the games are maxed out, and run with sweet a sweet FPS count, I'm happy.

quitting PC gaming as a whole and buying a console. plenty of mouse and keyboard peripherals, many games let you create your own content from scratch, no upgrading except from every 4-5 years, and that is quickly expanding to 9-10 years and at a third the price of consistently upgrading, and PC exclusives are rarer and rarer these days. as far as you've upgraded your PC, you should be able to play most indie games for the next few years without issue.
I call troll.

OT: Just upgrade unless you're really far behind today.
IT'S CALLED A MOTHER FUCKING OPINION!!!!!!!!!!!FD,JHSB,JGHKFBSKGSGYDSLHUFHJ,FBHHFIUBSUIHGYU!

i apologize, I've had to explain that 5 times tonight. but it is just MY opinion.
I think the problem that people have is that it has no relevance to what the OP is asking. He is asking should he buy a new computer, or upgrade his current one. Saying "Buy a console" is not helpful.

ALWAYS BETTER TO UPGRADE
even if you buy completely new parts and just keep the shell it will be cheaper and you can tailor it to whatever specifics you wan't
plus you get bragging rights...

You don't go shoving your opinions down other peoples throats in a thread where its clearly not wanted. The OP asked about new or upgrading PCs, said nothing about consoles, didn't ask to hear about consoles. Your comment actually provided absolutely no discussion value for the OP apart from flamebait.
i didn't shove it down your throat. no one made you reply. he wanted suggestions, didn't believe either was too good, offered an alternative. oh, and as for discussion value, you and several users have commented quite frequently on my response to this thread. how about that for discussion value?
See where you went wrong was actually not paying attention to the OP at all, he asked
Is it better to buy new parts for the PC you have, or to buy a completely new PC?
He didn't ask if there was another option, he didn't ask for a 3rd option, he said THIS or THIS. you said, screw your options, I'm making up my own completely irrelevant option over here.

You see its all in they way he used the word "or" very important to make sure you read ever word in the post.

i'm tired, and i generally don't care for this discussion anymore, so i'll answer one of your whateverthefuckyoucallits, since i skipped most of them. calling a modern controller a joystick is like calling a person a neanderthal. it's demeaning.

and you know what? at least i didn't say "upgrade unless your too old" like everyone fucking else on this thread. for a bit of originality, for a different opinion, i get targeted as the anti citizen. cause apaprently the PC gamers are too fucking insecure to be faced with an alternative solution. i suppose "elitist" would imply a sense of self confidence, which the PC community obviously lacks.

so consider this my final post to this thread. I'm forgetting this ever happened, don't bother replying as you and everyone else will garner no response from the lonely console gamer who dared to give his opinion.

but before i go:

Ok do even understand the basics of a computer? What a Graphics card or a mother board is?
to say
and you know what? at least i didn't say "upgrade unless your too old" like everyone fucking else on this thread
is pretty ignorant since most posts specified that it depends on what exactly is old, and the actually upgrade options differ depending accordingly.

And if you are not even going to read my post, it is arrogant and ignorant to even respond when you wont listen to the other persons side. Also i was unaware anteaters had typing skills, let alone knew how to turn on a computer.

trolling much?

O.T. Depends on your current system. If your motherboard is too old to support the newest processors e.t.c. Upgrading is usually cheaper though.

give me a brake. and there's no proof that a keyboard is more precise than a controller, it's personal preference. also, you can change the controller's sensitivity, it's in this thing called the options menu.
.
I would like to see a controller that can beat my 5000 dpi gaming mouse.

The general rule of thumb to decided wether an upgrade is a better choice than building from scratch for me is the CPU socket.

If your CPU socket is still supported right now you may consider an upgrade, otherwise, just invest in a new motherboard/CPU combo. Since i'm not made of money, I'll usualy build a new machine over time, since I can re-use my ram, videocard, peripherals and OS. Replace them with newer parts over time, it also alows to purchase part when they are on sale, or consider a newer model that just came out that wasn't available at the start of the project.

It's all about your budget and what's the current status of your machine!

I tend to buy a new one, but that's because I will use the same computer for about 7 to 10 years before upgrading to a new one. At the moment I have an alienware computer that's about 4 years old and it still runs every game on max graphics, so I doubt I'll need anything new for it. On the other hand if all you need is say, a new graphics card or something, don't go buy a new computer just for that.

i personally prefer to build from the ground up if my current PC can no longer handle the programs rather than upgrade for no other reason than i like to get my hot little hands on lots of new parts at the same time and add the lessons ive learned rather than working round old gear

If you can't glue a quad core to this motherboard... forget it. Just buy a new PC. Unless you can upgrade to last gen Core 2 Duo, which would be like the price of a new quad core. So it's a waste. Even from the perspective of having GOOD spare parts just lying around and doing nothing. A whole PC you can give to your sister, or something.

Yeah. I once argued the pros of a controller and got flamed the hell out of. These PC fans are vicious. And i even play PC.

Yeah. I once argued the pros of a controller and got flamed the hell out of. These PC fans are vicious. And i even play PC.
The thing about that is, that a PC can use both, you can have a keyboard+mouse, and a controller for certain games, so its not really a good enough argument as to why you should get a console over a PC.

True, but couple it with the above and it nails it. Especially when we can plug and play a keyboard and mouse too.

Long time lurker, first post.

Depending on your motherboard, you might have to change it if you want to upgrade your CPU. The sockets are not always the same (the new CPUs now are either 1156 or 1366) so if you have an old motherboard you might have to change it.

When looking for a GPU be sure your PSU can support it, some cards need more power than others. And if you're tech savvy I suggest that you buy the pieces online and build it yourself, don't go to a computer store, you'll save a lot of money.

Edit: Also, if you could post the exact spec of your computer it would be cool. Sometimes upgrades can be real small for a computer to run a game. It might not be your CPU but maybe you lack RAM if it's an old computer and you didn't upgrade, or the GPU that is outdated. Do you have a video card or it's an on-board chipset?
