A new way to drug your kids while they play videogames. I found out about this lovely contraption at Gamespy of all places. I wonder if they are doing medical tests of this device. I'd like to give it a whirl.

Taken from the original website. [http://www.pedisedate.com/Home.html]

"PediSedate is a medical device consisting of a colorful, toy-like headset that connects to a game component such as the Nintendo Game Boy system or a portable CD player. Once the child places it on his or her head and swings the snorkel down from its resting place atop the head, PediSedate transparently monitors respiratory function and distributes nitrous oxide, an anesthetic gas. The child comfortably becomes sedated while playing with a Nintendo Game Boy system or listening to music. This dramatically improves the hospital or dental experience for the child, parents and healthcare providers.

The result is a system that provides a calming influence over the children, monitors the child continuously, allows the procedure to be performed by less skilled personnel, increases the speed with which procedures can be performed and makes the procedure a less stressful experience for all involved. Each headset can be used multiple times per day by replacing the disposable components contained in the disposable kit.

PediSedate consists of a state of the art anesthesia administration and monitoring system. A pulse-oximeter within the headset, monitors oxygenation and a capnometer monitors second-to-second respiratory rate ensuring the safety of the patient. This currently is not the standard of care in outpatient settings. The PediSedate anesthesia delivery system delivers Nitrous Oxide and other volatile agents via a patented anesthesia delivery/scavenging mask situated in the snorkel. Inhalation anesthesia is both painless and titrateable. The benefits of volatile anesthetics are that onset and recovery times are rapid, which reduces cost to the healthcare system."

And if that's not enough to convince you that this product is freaking amazing just look at this (high as a kite) customer:

Am I the only one who is somewhat worried by this? I mean seriously.

Looks creepy...

Can't the doctors give the kids some gas the classic way?

It makes sense. But its creepy as hell, though. Plus the name is absolutely ridiculous, even if its accurate. Practices of yester-year arent much better... putting alcohol on a babies gums when they are teething, etc....

Xray with a pokemon on it = cute and a good idea.

Gas mask for dental procedures = how on earth does that work?

So, uh... It's basically like giving an anesthetic except that you can play a Gameboy while you do it???

Why would anyone be worried about this, I mean, it's just a way to sedate kids in preparation for an operation. I mean, I remember getting my tonsils taken out when I was little, I sure as hell would have loved something like that, I was terrified at the time, so something to take my mind of it would have been great.

Now, as it says, it's designed to be used by less experience personnel, so, it would be a problem if they started marketing this to parents as a way to get their hyperactive kids to sleep, which of course would be wrong on so many levels. Then again, if they're the kind to be buying this sort of thing, they've probably already been drugging their kids anyway. :/

Well said! I doubt it'd be made available to the general public - and even if it were, catastrophic parents already have access to a hysterical variety of ways to sedate the children they can't be bothered actually raising. Depressing, but there it is... =S

I agree with whoever came up with this idea.

We need to gas those freaks, maybe then they'll be calm.
