i just finished watching Pee Wee's Big Adventure for the first time in, oh say, 15 years? i remember watching it religiously as a child, never actually owning a copy but rather, constantly making my mother rent it from the grocery store. i found that a lot of the humor holds up surprisingly well. in fact, some of it has a very, almost sinister undertone to it, and very adult at times. i was actually surprised to see that tim burton directed it, but now i can clearly see that it is his brainchild. i also like how phil hartman co-wrote the script, you can see some of his sardonic humor as well.
i find that a lot of the movies and shows that were so loved as a child, especially being an 80's child, don't hold weight in the present. but this is a good example of something that still holds true. if you put aside the whole scandal thing, pee wee is really an insanely brilliant character. i have to give him much credit for helping me develop my imagination and sense of humor. it is sad how scandals often outweigh the genius (another good example - michael jackson)
are there any others out there, specifically from the 1980's?
