I desperately need to believe that this is some sort of hoax or troll attempt, because I simply can't bring myself to believe that anyone could be that ignorant about human nature.

Oh, I don't know, it's a good idea, except in anything like the real world. Lots of good ideas are like that, and it's not unusual for people to forget about the real world, and get very angry when told about it.

So, before I get to a job interview, before I meet my date, before I attend any social function at all, people can judge me based on what others have said?
Often, in social settings, I say the wrong thing. Sometimes I do the wrong thing. Mostly I like to do my own thing, even at a party, and my disinterest in those I don't know and the fact I like to correct people[footnote]Not because "I'm smarter than you," but because I don't think many people like to be wrong and I, myself, would like to be corrected if I'm wrong. Treat those as you wish to be treated.[/footnote] often has me coming off as arrogant.

I hope no one that has a problem with me has my current phone number.
I hope no one that develops a problem with me keeps my current phone number.

What's to stop someone making up a phone number? You could be blissfully unaware that someone has made an account for you and that you've just not been notified... Unless they have some clever(or scary) way of verifying if it's your actual number.

If this isn't a hoax it's born of complete naivety of how the internet works, and basically of human nature. It's a revolting idea and it needs to die a painful and very public death as a warning to others. Let's please not make pluralism un-viable.

Edit- It just dawned on me exactly what part of the business model is. Holy shit... Forcing people to sign up to defend themselves against allegations and exposing them to ads in the process.

Fuck right off you scumbags.

I would want to believe that this is a hoax, but likely it's not. However, there's now a petition against its launch on change.org, which I would tell anyone who's concerned about it to sign. https://www.change.org/p/apple-google-inc-ban-the-launch-of-the-peeple-application

...Well then...

Guess I'm gonna go live in a cave for the rest of my life. It won't be so bad. I'll live off the fatta the land, with the bunnies.

But really, this is the single worst possible realization of social media I've ever imagined. Even if people didn't abuse the shit out of it (which is guaranteed to happen), who the hell wants to feel under public scrutiny all the damn time? It's bad enough that employers are checking your Facebook before deciding whether or not to hire you, or to use as grounds for firing. I get the feeling that the only way the naive morons behind it could comprehend how ridiculous this is, would be if someone rated them individually (5 stars of course; no chance of them approving that shit) with nothing but extremely personal information - address, bank details, passwords, etc.

Anyone wanna get Anonymous on this? Seems like the sorta battle they've always been dreaming of.

EDIT:

How is something like this even legal? It's slander lawsuit waiting to happen. Among a million other things that can go wrong.

Hilarious. She's back pedaling so fast, if she was in a Delorean she'd be in the year 1955 by now.

That doesn't even answer how people can't just use fake phone numbers, sign up for someone else, and then approve awful comments

So much for asking my editor if there should be an emergency Garwulf's Corner on Peeple...

(I may add it to the queue, though...)

Might still be worth doing... Help get the word out a little more in a different form. Mine was rather lackluster in terms of what I could do as a news thread maker. I've done what I could though, if the view/reply count has anything to say~

Edit: On the other hand... Less work to do!

I am not in favor of this, but there is one crucial aspect that may not make this as bad as people have predicted. Yes anyone can post your personal information with their reviews, even if you don't want them to, but those who do so will have to post that under their own full name as wekl. This meanis they can't attack from the shadows like stalkers, trolls and generally awful people do. And let's be real, 99% of the people who do this are complete cowards who wouldn't do a quarter of the shit they do if others could see who they are. Because if you can be seen, you can suffer consequences for your actions. It won't be a one-way fight is what I'm saying.

If so, well, not good, why would you pretend this? But better than it existing.
If this does turn out to be a Hoax, I think there will need to be a Garwulf's Corner on it...
This is only interesting enough if it's a hoax? You have some very high standards.

I can't wait to read the reviews on Sarkenstein, Obama, Chris Roberts and the like. Also, there will absolutely be a profile on Hitler within 48 hours.

And when a Hitler profile does come up (hell, it may be the first one in the system), it will have a 5-star rating, with many calling him an inspiration on how charismatic, thoughtful and imaginative he was. Can't forget the leadership qualities that would be exhibited.

It will be a funny read, and hopefully someone from some well-known news site will make a humorous story from it.

John Oliver: "I'm sorry, but have you ever BEEN on the internet?"

Pretty much sum it all up right there.

The responses in this thread warm my heart.

OT: What an awful idea. Lets not make everything an internet popularity contest. I don't have social media under my real name, besides my e-mail and I don't want others grading me for whether they like me.

So...

Given the update, the "End of All Peace and Civility" app, dubbed Peeple (I actually would prefer the former, as it seems more accurate and eye-catching), has been horrifically downgraded to a superficial social megaphone to rave about an individual, in which its noise will be based on the number of individuals that shout into it.

Does...does that mean that we win?

Will this be the case or will the creator BS and troll the world? Only time will tell, I guess.

That Doctor Phil interview sure was something else though huh?

"You want people to go on the Internet and write anything they want, but when you came here you wanted to edit the show, review the show and control all the questions I was going to ask you."

Pretty stupid way of going forward. XD
