Just to prove to myself I'm not completely crackers, or at least I'm not the only one.

I was working on my groups ongoing D&D 4th campaign yesterday, and between statting up some cannibal dwarves and their shadow masters I found myself getting the urge to roll up yet another PC for myself, despite the fact that I'll never ever get to actually play. Do any other eternal DM's get similar impulses, or have I just gone loopy?
It's tough for GMs sometimes, especially when the game is good. Usually you can just go and have a really hands on NPC.

On a related note, how have you been enjoying 4th Edition? I took a look at it myself and it seems to take all the fun out of pen and paper.

WotC has done everything in their power to make DnD lame.... my friends and i have a GREAT homebrew game going at the moment, WAY more fun than any packaged game i've played... if we don't like the rules, we just write new ones!

It's a very common urge. As the DM you are almost by definition making a game you would like to play. Morover, many DMs get into DMing because they want to see games up to their own standard - not just because they want to DM to that standard.
