The Escapist said some things about lulzsec, they made a deinal of service attack that brought the site down for a few hours.
I don't understand the difficulty of ignoring an internet forum. Besides, LulzSec has started claiming to be crusaders for internet freedom but they react to criticism more harshly than any of the supposed Big Brother types.viranimus said:However I have to ask how could a group of hackers ignore being constantly called criminals, inhuman, and have death, and prison rape wished upon them repeatedly by a large gathering and collective and ignore it?
And while were at it, this is specifically in reference to a DDoS attack against the escapist. So I would inquire, can I get a reference to what changes a DDOS attack from being a nuisance to being globally viewed as illegal activity? While were at it, What is the law that grants global jurisdiction against network intrusions due to lacking security protocols? Look I am not advocating Lulzsecs methods. But I would have to be rather thick to not understand their point of view and why this was done.
What he said.Mid-Boss said:Wow I thought these hacker groups were all about free speech and internet freedom. Apparently they are as long as no one uses that free speech or freedom to criticize them.
Lost all respect for these douche bags.
It seems sympathetic to the Escapist to me. The joke is that they're full of righteous bravado in the first panel, then see The Escapist getting the stuffing beaten out of it and turn chicken.TheScientificIssole said:Is it lashing at us or not? I think the insightful articles might be a bit of a jab at our slightly "highbrow" or as others view it elitist nature. Others do view us on other forums not all people but some do view these forums as an elitist shit hole with a way too lofty opinion of ourselves. Although it is funny usually the forums that are vocal about us being elitist if you took their comments and stuck them on the Escapist or vice versa I would think the forums were the same. So I am basically saying most forums are on the same level and when you say something bad and point the finger there are 3 pointing back.Aidinthel said:I don't understand the difficulty of ignoring an internet forum. Regarding the legality of DDoS, well Google found me this, which covers the US and UK at least, and in any case it's certainly immoral at least even if law hasn't necessarily caught up to modern tech. I don't know why "global" jurisdiction is so important. And besides, I was really thinking more about the whole massive releases of private user data than their DDoS attacks when I asserted that they were criminals.
As for the part I bolded: If I enter someone's house and take their stuff it's still illegal even if the door was unlocked. And again, what's with this "global jurisdiction" stuff? Is there such a thing as global jurisdiction at all? Not even the UN represents everybody.
Being able to understand why someone does something doesn't make their actions any less immoral nor does it give me any obligation to defend them. I really hate to Godwin this discussion but it's 3 AM and I'm too tired to think of a less dramatic analogy so I'll point out that as a history student I can understand why Hitler needed a scapegoat for German defeat in WW1 to justify his highly nationalistic ideology but that doesn't make his actions anything less than evil. It just means that it is entirely possible to arrive at a logical conclusion that happens to be evil.

I very much doubt it. For one thing PA tends to be like that themselves, and for another Tycho wrote an article in the very first issue of the Escapist.Glademaster said:I think the insightful articles might be a bit of a jab at our slightly "highbrow" or as others view it elitist nature.
I don't think you got it. The Escapist is getting beaten up for doing what PA was thinking of doing and PA runs away. They're calling themselves cowards.Echo Delta said:Perhaps I didn't get it, but it still seemed like an underhanded shot at the escapist.
Yeah that's the feeling I got tooAidinthel said:]I don't think you got it. The Escapist is getting beaten up for doing what PA was thinking of doing and PA runs away. They're calling themselves cowards.

Well I was just saying if anything was a jab at the Escapist that was it and in the context it didn't seem like one.Aidinthel said:I very much doubt it. You're a bit off there.Caramel Frappe said:Pretty much showing that no one can stop LulzSec thus no one is willing to mess with them since The Escapist got it pretty bad from their hacking. Basically, the hackers shut down this website almost all day or so, taunting us on Twitter like it's some game while putting down other companies. The comic shows that no one should mess with them (but I doubt that)
Actually I read the twitter feed around the time it went down and with the looks of things people were just requesting that they take Escapist down among other sites. I don't see what being one of the last guys posting on the forum before it happen as anything to do with the argument. I too was one of the last, I was actually in the middle of posting a message when it went down... How is that relevant? I have no idea. I checked the twitter feed at the time and noticed a bunch of requests before hand.Glademaster said:Em they said it was because we talked shit about them. I mean come on people you can just google lulzec and escapist and the whole first page is just news on other websites. I mean really [http://www.google.ie/search?rlz=1C1SKPL_enIE424IE424&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=lulzsec+escapistmagazine] just click.
I was the one of the last as in I was there when it happened. The amount of people that don't know about it and aren't bothered to use google with the words Lulzsec and Escapist is astounding. While I am sure people did request it they wanted to do it anyway as they were building up to it due to Bethesda thread. They never said to someone unlike other sites to my knowledge that they would take us down they said it was due to the Bethesda thread or implied as they linked to that thread before taking down the site.Sovvolf said:Actually I read the twitter feed around the time it went down and with the looks of things people were just requesting that they take Escapist down among other sites. Well I'm still not seeing the relevance on who was their last. Though I get these feeling that you think me an ignorant idiot. I'm not, I didn't see the thread no, I don't tend to hang around on Bethesda. I read the twitter feed and got my ideas from that, why would I put extra research into it when I'd already seen enough to draw my conclusion?Glademaster said:I was the one of the last as in I was there when it happened. No I don't think you are an idiot. I think that it is really odd that other people aren't bothered to even try look for info. The only reason I knew about the Bethesda thread was someone on a thread about Lulzsec linked to their twitter which in turn had a link to the Brink/Bethesda thread.Sovvolf said:Well I'm still not seeing the relevance on who was their last. I watched people request the site be taken down on Titan Tuesday (when they were taking requests to take any website down) then the site goes down. The logical conclusion is that it was taken down out of requests. If I'm wrong I'll happily step down and accept that I'm wrong however please don't think me an idiot.
Well there is a large proportion of people who frequent this site that are unaware of outside opinion of the Escapist.Socks and Shoes said:You're a bit off there.Caramel Frappe said:Pretty much showing that no one can stop LulzSec thus no one is willing to mess with them since The Escapist got it pretty bad from their hacking. Not alot of people on the net like this site and don't care whether lulzsec hacked it or not, that's what the comic was about.
