And while were at it, this is specifically in reference to a DDoS attack against the escapist. So I would inquire, can I get a reference to what changes a DDOS attack from being a nuisance to being globally viewed as illegal activity? While were at it, What is the law that grants global jurisdiction against network intrusions due to lacking security protocols? Look I am not advocating Lulzsecs methods. But I would have to be rather thick to not understand their point of view and why this was done.

I don't understand the difficulty of ignoring an internet forum. Besides, LulzSec has started claiming to be crusaders for internet freedom but they react to criticism more harshly than any of the supposed Big Brother types.

Wow I thought these hacker groups were all about free speech and internet freedom. Apparently they are as long as no one uses that free speech or freedom to criticize them.

Regarding the legality of DDoS, well Google found me this, which covers the US and UK at least, and in any case it's certainly immoral at least even if law hasn't necessarily caught up to modern tech. I don't know why "global" jurisdiction is so important. And besides, I was really thinking more about the whole massive releases of private user data than their DDoS attacks when I asserted that they were criminals.

As for the part I bolded: If I enter someone's house and take their stuff it's still illegal even if the door was unlocked. And again, what's with this "global jurisdiction" stuff? Is there such a thing as global jurisdiction at all? Not even the UN represents everybody.

Being able to understand why someone does something doesn't make their actions any less immoral nor does it give me any obligation to defend them. I really hate to Godwin this discussion but it's 3 AM and I'm too tired to think of a less dramatic analogy so I'll point out that as a history student I can understand why Hitler needed a scapegoat for German defeat in WW1 to justify his highly nationalistic ideology but that doesn't make his actions anything less than evil. It just means that it is entirely possible to arrive at a logical conclusion that happens to be evil.

It seems sympathetic to the Escapist to me. The joke is that they're full of righteous bravado in the first panel, then see The Escapist getting the stuffing beaten out of it and turn chicken.

I think the insightful articles might be a bit of a jab at our slightly "highbrow" or as others view it elitist nature. Others do view us on other forums not all people but some do view these forums as an elitist shit hole with a way too lofty opinion of ourselves. Although it is funny usually the forums that are vocal about us being elitist if you took their comments and stuck them on the Escapist or vice versa I would think the forums were the same. So I am basically saying most forums are on the same level and when you say something bad and point the finger there are 3 pointing back.

Pretty much showing that no one can stop LulzSec thus no one is willing to mess with them since The Escapist got it pretty bad from their hacking. Basically, the hackers shut down this website almost all day or so, taunting us on Twitter like it's some game while putting down other companies. The comic shows that no one should mess with them (but I doubt that)

Yeah The Escapist got ddos'd to death for a few hours by Lulzsec last Tuesday. Most think it was in response to the sites negativity towards Lulzsecs actions though given that it was Titanic Tuesday, I think it was mostly done out of request.

Em they said it was because we talked shit about them. I was one of the last people to post on the forum before it happened. They even linked to the Bethesda/Brink user account hack as the reason to why they did it.

I too was one of the last, I was actually in the middle of posting a message when it went down... How is that relevant? I have no idea. I checked the twitter feed at the time and noticed a bunch of requests before hand.

No I don't think you are an idiot. I think that it is really odd that other people aren't bothered to even try look for info. The only reason I knew about the Bethesda thread was someone on a thread about Lulzsec linked to their twitter which in turn had a link to the Brink/Bethesda thread.

I am just going from what I remember and I may be wrong I am not infallible but I remember them taking requests officially after the website went down and taunted the Escapist beforehand.

I was talking in general with the lack of knowledge of members about the "attack" with many no knowing there was a DoS. I suppose a lot of people only frequent here and don't bother with some other forums.

Well there is a large proportion of people who frequent this site that are unaware of outside opinion of the Escapist.
