Now for a story, and as a fair warning, this may get to be more of a rant than anything, but in a good way.

So I'm at the register at work today, waiting out the last hour of work before I get to go home when this somewhat older gentleman walks up to my lane. We start with a bit of small talk to keep the silence at bay, the same old drill I have with most people.
But the crazy thing is, once the order was completed, he kept talking to me. This is already very rare considering that nobody wastes their time talking to a cashier, and since I usually am very difficult to talk to this holds even more true. Finally he gets to asking a question:
"Are you new here? I ask because I don't think I've seen you before."
I don't quite know how to respond since I've been working there for over a year, so I explain that as gently as I can and qualify it that I do normally work the morning shifts so that might be why he never sees me.
Then a follow-up question:
"Have I given you something recently?"
He obviously saw the confusion on my face and took that as a no, because he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small Ziploc bag which contained inside something that looked like a small tongs or a big tweezers of some sort.
He then goes on to tell me how he makes these for people, and that they are toast tongs. He explained that he hand-makes them out of hickory and after sanding them down he coats them in some kind of oil I have never heard of to keep them going for years after the first use. Each one costs him about two dollars to make.

He's given out over fifteen hundred of them to random people he just met.

How is it that such a small and even insignificant gift make my day so much better? I mean I rarely even eat toast, but I have resolved to eat more toast simply so I can give this gift the proper use it deserves. This guy just gives them out to people simply because he wants to. He's spent over three thousand dollars making these little gifts for people. Because of this man's random act of kindness I am in a mood that I just can't get down from.

So for discussion value, I ask you this:
Do you have a person who has done something like this? Let this thread be one of happy-faced stories.
Additionally, since I don't even know this man's name, when I tell this story to people, what should I call him? All I've come up with so far is Mr. Toast, but that seems to only serve to diminish and mock the gift he gave me.

I'm generally not really a people person, and to be honest I think this whole situation would probably make me uncomfortable, but I have to say that what this man is doing sounds very nice. I can understand how it would make you happy. I have never met someone like that, so I don't have any stories to share.

BTW I don't think you need a name for him. You told it just fine.

I'm not a people person either, but the guy was so nice I couldn't help but love him and the oddly placed gift.

yeah, i went on a journey once, and i met alot of people that really lifted my spirits like that. in the middle of nowhere i was given a ride and a sandwich, then at the bus station a random person gave me a slice of pizza. on the bus later, someone gave me a bag of snacks with a 20 dollar bill in it. i didn't ask for any of these things.
much later, i was again walking on the side of the road, at night, looking for a place to sleep, when a guy who refered to himself as 'the crazy hungarian' pulled over and picked me up. he let me use his shower, he gave me a meals, clothes, a place to sleep, and an apprenticeship with him as a plumber. i didn't ask for any of that either, and the only thing he asked of me was to do the same for someone else later in my life. i'll never forget that kindness.

I remember working at a hotel, back in high school. And a couple times I was left $50+ tips that allllways make my day. But to be honest I think I found more used condoms than large tips so humans must be the worst.

That's an awesome story! That guy sounds really nice.

As for me, most people around where I live are rather apathetic toward others. I've never actually experienced or even seen such a random act of kindness...

I remember that I was spending time with this girl who is very friendly with me,
and then, since I play guitar and love Pink Floyd, she gave me a necklace with a Pink Floyd The Wall guitar pick and another Dark Side of the Moon guitar pick in a match box with a DSOTM cover that she hand crafted especially for me.
Our relationship was deep, but I never expected her to do this for me.
I felt so good I played and sang with the guitar, around people, loudly, for them, something I just never do usually.

Years ago, I hung out on an IRC channel that had a large British contingent, and one of the guys was lamenting the fact that it was nearly impossible to get his favorite candy, Reese's Pieces, in his town. So I asked him for his address and sent him a couple of pound bags of them. I didn't know him very well at all, but I figured my $10 spent would make him very happy. This was in July. I sent them off and pretty much completely forgot all about it.

Fast forward to winter, when I lament on the forum that the IRC crowd frequented that it was impossible to get a proper Gryffindor scarf in the US, because they're the wrong colors. (This was after the release of the first movie.) For the proper color and quality of scarf, you had to get it in the UK. Out of the blue, a few weeks later, I get a package wrapped in Christmas paper containing - you guessed it - a proper Harry Potter scarf with a note from the guy I sent the candy saying that I couldn't understand how much it had meant to him. Not the candy, per se, but that someone would go to the trouble to do something nice for him.

Still have the scarf, and love it dearly.

I recall a random conversation with a customer when I worked at a grocery store years ago. Somehow we ended up talking about the wild shopping carts roaming the parking lot and how it was my duty to spare the customers from having any dings from the wild carts.

Also, I can't help but feel like I am frequently that guy who does something weird for cashiers or other service people to hopefully make their day a little better or more memorable. I try to be friendly, because I have worked in service and retail, so I know how dull those jobs can get for those folks. Currently I'm a cable salesman and it's far more interesting.

I like Mr. Toast, I don't feel it's insulting at all. =]

I can't readily think of a story yet, so I'll update once I've thought of a good one

My father (he answers to the name of "Papa") will often give his coat to homeless people, he carries on wearing a tatty worn out leather jacket that his best friend gave him during his late teens because that barbour wax jacket he just bought?, he gave it away to someone who needed more warmth and insulation from the elements.

In terms of making others happy I sometimes make cards with the message "for what you just did, I think your beautiful, pay the love forward" and give them out to people who open doors for others and say thank you and please!, you know, nice people!

I met a girl in a nightclub with one of my cards, a nightclub that was a 6 hour drive from where I lived, that was awesome.

"Sir Toast, Knight of the Bread Makers, Third Baker to the Throne."

Hows that for a name/title?

The evil prick moral to the story:

You just got had by the Owner of the local bakery and duped into eating more bread.

In all seriousness... Its really all about the perspective. If you want to see this as something that reinstills faith in humanity.. theres a way you can see it that way. If you want to see it in other ways, theres ways of doing that too.

I think the best is (well that I've personally seen out here) was 6 years ago. I had just started driving and came off of a shift at work driving home had about 30 something hours of no sleep. I was doing full time school and full time work as a waitress at night. I was concerned about my mum waiting up for me so I hurried home instead of staying at someone's house(plus I had class later that morning). I am not too sure of the details, all I remember is driving home on the freeway the road curving and all of a sudden my car is flipping upside down. I rolled it twice, spun it a few times, took out a light pole, took out a sprinkler, and the second light pole stopped me. Three guys saw the whole thing(which is really why I know that much) and pulled over(none of these guys knew each other mind you) and helped me and made sure I was ok. They stayed there until both my parents and the police came. Other than that I don't believe we actually have nice people out here. I try and do what I can but since I don't really get out much when I do it is limited to holding doors for people and being nice to cashiers/servers/people in the service industry(presuming they aren't being cunts to me cause they're having a bad day especially since just about every job I've held has been in the service industry).

I don't people are awful as some say. I think people just remember bad experiences than the good ones. For every asshole there is at least ten decent human beings out there. Just because a person is looking out for himself and his family first, it doesn't make them shit.
