Stupid? No I don't think so.

Selfish with little common sense? Damn straight
Pretty much this :) Usually when I say 'People are stupid', what I actually mean is 'I have observed one or more people in the immediate or recent past who appear to lack basic common sense. Allow me to elaborate on my particular example so we may all be amused'. It's just that saying 'people are stupid' is quicker :p

Before we became a sanitized, politically correct child-worshipping society, people were punished accordingly for doing stupid things. Stick a fork in the light socket, little Johnny? Whelp, betch'ya won't be doin' THAT again anytime soon, now will ya?

I gun the car every time some dumbass walks off the sidewalk onto the street without looking in EITHER direction against a pedestrian red light; Seriously, it makes my day.

Now I think we keep stupid people around so they can amuse us on YouTube.

A lot of people are stupid though, here's an example I came across last night on my MMO, now I know it's not the best example in this situation but it has its point. "Why should I waist the time to go create the top when I can just buy it for 50 grand?" Yes he misspelled waste. For clarification the top takes a minimum of like 5 minutes to create max 10 minutes top isn't even worth 50 grand.

Sorry I had a huge nerd moment I'll just bold the important stuff! =D

Edit: I'm seeing a lot of comments on how groups are dumb while individuals are not, this seems like a very lonesome view of the world, as it seems to imply that people shouldnt interact socially. Also, i highly doubt that it's any more than an excuse to say people are stupid while excluding yourself from "people".
Its called a group mentality. Basically, if a single individual becomes part of a group, he is no longer an individual, but a small part of a larger organism. But with that, he develops a mentality that essentially stifles his own individual thought for what the group thinks. Sǿren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Sigmund Freud all have a theory on the human mind in a group setting; though Sǿren, views it as a dangerous and unruly beast, Friedrich views the need for a Übermensch, or Over/Super man, to lead the group, to which Freud agrees in most respects.

Basically, the arguement that people are stupid in groups is because when people get into a group, their actions are not dictated by their own beliefs or ideals, but by the group. Its not a attack against Socializing, as much as a warning to avoid becoming a sheep to the mob.
