O.k tell me if im the only one who experienced this but its really annoying for me.
Someone will be doing something and ill try to grab their attention to say something and even when they are only across the table they will ignore me (sometimes). At other times i will make a random remark to someone completely different and the person will chip in. I tested this in class today. i near-shouted the persons name and clapped my hands loudly and the person didn't react at all. I then said to someone else something about person 1 and P1 hears this and answers. When I had her attention I asked if she had heard me and she said she had not.

Weird No? Has this ever happened to you?

Happens a lot in my household. Selective hearing, I swear. Women seem to be better at it.

Also tends to go hand in hand with the whole 'ears burning', as in they won't notice you trying to get their attention until you talk about them.

Ah, people.

EDIT: Ninja'd. That's what I get for double checking my post. XD

Yeah, people are more concerned about themselves then you so if your remarks aren't interesting to them at the moment they will ignore you and/or change to a subject they want to talk about. which is really annoying when they start it up in the middle of you talking...

That's a pretty pessimistic way to explain a natural feature of our senses.

It's a passive process for most people that has nothing to do with their feelings of other people.

"It's a passive process for most people that has nothing to do with their feelings of other people."
exactly. It's a process enabled by ones own self not thinking that other people like to talk. I find it's most likely to happen to people who hate to not hear themselves(ie: do they try to sing?)
Yes it is pessimistic but i am pessimistic of the whole "human nature" thing. For instance i already think people think too highly of themselves in giving themselves a whole other name "human nature" rather then "Animal nature" or just normal nature.
