I have purchased my first Anime film

and this saturday night I may lose my Anime Virginity....(do film count? or doesn it have to be one of those series?)

aaaaanyway

the film is Perfect Blue, reason I got it was I hear it seems to have "heavly inspiried" another film Black swan..one of my favorites, and it looks interesting. Im expecting it to be quite a mindfuck

what Im asking is, has anyone seen it? and what version did you prefer? is the "subing" good or is it awful? usually I prefer subs in films but with animation I supose its different

I know the phrase "sub or dub" is like petrol and a match in Anime fan circles..Im not trying ot star some huge debate or flame war or anything...

Oh dear gods... Breaking your cherry on Perfect Blue?! *Shudders* That movie is a total mind-job...

OT: The dub localization isn't as horrible as some, so if you feel like going the easy way, then it should do you fine.

When I first watch that film in dub (and sub later on) and I actually prefer the dub version (normally I would say sub). The dubbing was actually alright unlike some other dub anime out there.

I always watch sub, though I know there are some decent dubs out there. Suppose it just depends on the person.

Ahh I too lost my anime virginity at the tender age of 11 to a film. Two actually. Was rough DP...
Street Fighter II movie and Urotsukidoji (otherwise known as tentacle rape 101)

Eh, I suggest going with the dub and if their voices dont make you want to pop your eardrums then stick with that. If their voices are painful then swap to the subs.

There are a few series where the dub is clearly superior but they are few and far between. And general rule is you don't want to be watching something in a deep japanese setting with english voices. They always seem to absolutely rape the japanese names.
But something like Bebop or Berserk which in Berserks case is very definitely in a english setting the dub is way better.

Dubs, I hate subbed films, I don't enjoy having to have my attention focused on the bottom portion of the screen, it leaves less time to take in the visuals, which in my eyes is what it's all about.

Some anime dubs are good (See Hellsing, where they are in England and the dubs are English) some are cringe worthy (see Naruto.)

Personally as long as the voices work with the setting or are well voice acted, like all studio Ghibli films, then I don't mind.

I feel this not only realtes to anime but to movies in general. I always watch with subs if the movie wasn't orignially made in my mother language eventhough all the movies here in Germany are dubbed. I find that with subs you still get more of the intentional acting whereas dubbing mostly takes a lot of emotion and culture away.

Bring em on. I love TV based games like Family Guy Online [http://family-guy-online.browsergamez.com/] or Game of Thrones Online [http://game-of-thrones-online.browsergamez.com/].

I personally prefer to watch subbed anime. I do not mind reading subtitles. And there are some real bad dubs out there (Cardcaptors, anyone?).

Listen, Suh-KUR-uh.

(I have no contribution to make to this post, since I haven't seen Perfect Blue.)

Excellent choice. That was gonna be my suggestion. Also, yeah... prepare for a mind-fuck of a psychological thriller.

My rule of thumb for anime: if it takes place in Japan, and the characters are supposed to be speaking Japanese.. watch the sub. Or both.
If it's "Westernized" anime (quick example: Black Lagoon), generally watch the dub. Or both.

Neither.

You should watch Boku no Pico instead.

I think it'll be right up your alley.

I was just pointing out a famously bad dub of a good anime show. For the record, I own the entire run of Card Captor Sakura.

As for Perfect Blue, I did watch it (courtesy of my local video store That's Rentertainment). I liked it. Now all I have to do is find the time to watch Paprika, which was another movie by the director of Perfect Blue. I also recommend watching Tokyo Godfathers.

And I was just quoting an oft-repeated line from said famously bad dub. Maybe I should have added "You gotta expect the unexpected!" to the end.
