Note: I'm going to go ahead and assume that if you post an idea or something, you don't mind me using it. I'll go ahead and message you about it if I want to use it, but keep it in mind.
Alright, folks. How's it going? It's a long post, but there's a "Too long, didn't read" at the bottom. I know I'm new and everything, but I decided to just sort of throw myself from the balcony of anonymity and hope somebody stops me from smashing into the ground. If not, this IS a zombie apocalypse discussion. I'll get back up, albeit with a hunger for human flesh/brains.
Right, so as beaten, bludgeoned, shot, dragged through the mud, and thrown into the fire the idea is... I'm trying to write a novel, situated a millennium after the end of the world. Don't worry about details about plot, I'm just trying to get a good idea about what to include atmosphere-wise. I haven't completely decided the specifics, as it's a mystery within the story itself (so far at least), but the point is there are 'infected,' or 'zombies.' It could be (I figure, but not really limiting it to) biological warfare gone horribly wrong, a virus of sorts, a parasite, or aliens. Okay, not aliens.
Still here? Cool. I'd like to know what you think of what I've got thus far, and then add whatever you've wanted to see in an apocalyptic setting. If you like Fallout, think along those lines, what do you love about it? What do you want them to add? If you like Left 4 Dead or other zombie/horror games, what's good in those? If you don't feel like reading beyond, and just want to talk about the end of the world and its repercussions, go for it.
So it's a thousand years after the zombie apocalypse has pretty much decimated civilization, and for the most part takes place in the basic Arizona desert region. The infection isn't limited to humans, animals have contracted whatever the problem is and have evolved and adapted. So while there are 'Old World' animals, they're usually a bit changed, and then of course there's whatever freakshows have evolved from the muck. Between your common zombie (95.99% of the infected) and some strange mutations (4%), to even rare monstrous creatures like in Dead Space or Lost Planet (.01%). At this point it's not so much the problem of the infection, though it is a problem, it's simply that civilization can't be rebuilt all that easily and the book takes place in the hot-as-hell desert.
People have formed colonies, even towns and small cities, but with no real means of education by our standards, it's basically just a bunch of random people trying to not die. There are forms of trade and such, and there is actual cattle, orchards, and mines that people have managed to make. There's also just the bunch of random whackjobs running around -- think marauders, bandits, general baddies. And then there are the simply unique that I won't get into, though I'm open to whatever crazy little group or society anyone can come up with. While I imagine there are those among you with no real ties to religion (me being one), there is a Church that has formed and has quite a strong grip on around 80-90% of the population. It's kind of a mix of everything, sort of leaning towards Christianity, but for the most part it's fairly conservative.
Weapons aren't all that advanced. Yes, there are guns, but almost in a sort of "Fable 2" or "Fallout" sort of way. If you know "One Piece," kind of like that. They're either 'New World' guns and not really that good, or 'Old World' guns and either completely broken or in need of repair. They're the preferred weapon against humans if possible, and for taking out animals. Melee weapons (swords, for the most part), are used and a bit more common, and highly effective against the 'common zombie.'
...Right, guess that's all I can think to include right now. If you have questions or suggestions, I'll edit or make new posts as need be.
TL;DR: There are zombies. There are people, there are 'bandits,' and there is a borderline theocracy. Weapons ain't all that great, think "Fable 2" or "Fallout 3." What makes a good post-apocalypse scenario/story/setting/atmosphere?
