The problem always comes down to the fact that people can only look at one thing at a time. Using some device other than the main screen for things like inventory sounds like a great idea, but in practice there's no functional difference between popping up a window on the main screen or simply looking away from it. Either way, the player diverts all their attention from one thing to other, and then back again, and there's no real benefit to either the gameplay or immersion. If anything, having to refocus on a second screen will actually take longer than simply hitting a button to pop something up where you're already looking, so there can actually be a penalty in games where speed matters (although not so much for Minecraft).Seth Carter said:Ah yes, the ever-ironic fact that the Wii-U has the greatest potential to do PC-esque things like mouse-like controls or alternate windows/tabs on its gamepad, but its only ever used for gimmicky stuff, if at all.
If you're making a new game you could probably go either way, but for a port where the inventory system has already been built entirely using one screen that would be a lot of extra work for no real benefit.
