Persona 5 Delayed Until Summer 2016

Publisher softens blow with new trailer.

Atlus has announced that the fifth installment in the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series will not be arriving this year as previously planned.

In a video released this week (summarized by Siliconera [http://www.siliconera.com/2015/09/17/persona-5-director-shares-a-message-about-the-games-development-and-delay/]), series director Katsura Hashino offered an apology and provided some of the reasoning behind the decision, stating that the team needs additional time to tune gameplay and deliver a "more complete" game.

In the mean time, a new trailer has been released for Tokyo Game Show. The video shows some brief combat, a few grotesque enemies, and a handful of personas from the game.

The release window of Summer 2016 displayed at the end of the trailer likely only applies to the Japanese release, with the publisher's US division only stating that the game will release in Japan and the Americas in 2016. While releases in the Shin Megami series have been coming to the west more quickly as it's gained in popularity, it could still be several months before a North American launch.

When it does finally release, Persona 5 will be available for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles.

I knew in the back of my head that this would probably happen. I mean, we didn't hardly hear anything about it over the summer, in between E3 and PAX. I figured that waiting so long to release an exact date before the originally promised Q4 2015 was a bad sign.

This sucks. This really sucks.

Meh... I can wait... Besides, you can never "burn your dread" or "face yourself" too many times, anyway... :p

Other than that, I really should buy a mask for the 2016 premiere party...

It actually fits better into my gaming schedule coming out after DS3. Not a huge deal and the trailer was sweet.

Also, this is pretty old news :p

This game looks so good I'm not sure I care. I love that series and the games keep getting progressively better. I mean a year is a long wait but if the game isn't ready so be it.

Actually, I'm fine with this. There are so many games coming out in the next months that I'm interested in that I won't have the feeling I'm missing out. Also, more polish means a better experience, so go for it!

You know, this wouldn't be bad per se, if not for the fact that that fucker from Atlus USA has been swear(ly)ing up until like a few weeks ago that the game would come out in 2015 in NA. Anyone who isn't clouded by fanboyism would have been able to tell you that he's full of it and that any NA release would been 2016 at the earliest, but hey, the PR guy spewing shit and then having egg on his face was worth it. Fuck you Hardin.

Atleast now you guys got a taste of how Atlus(Japan and USA) treats Europeans. I'm prepared to play this game digital only, for 45 euro's in 2020.
Wow, you are one sad, sad little salty child.

Now, ignoring the blatantly obvious ignorance towards how things works... What makes you think he was lying? Because he, as an employee of Atlus USA, was repeating the information that Atlus of Japan was presenting them at the time? There isn't exactly a 1:1 ratio here in time and communication. Atlus USA isn't the developer, it's a publisher branch that relies on Atlus Japan (or Atlus proper) for any and all information in regards to the games and their dates.

And yes... Let's bring up something completely off topic because "why not, I'm salty and pissy". Atlus doesn't have an European branch, no surprise there that it takes longer. While it is on them that they haven't stuck with a publisher for more than a game or two for that particular area, what do you expect them to do? Instead of crying and whining, that is. No publishing branch = no easy release.

But please, being a childish boor is much more productive i guess.
You seem pretty angry at the fact that he/she is severely wound up at poor treatment by a company for some reason. I've said it before and I'll say it again: they're a company that wants your money, they're not your friend, you don't owe them any thanks or favours and if they're treating you poorly you have every right to criticise them. However you paint it having apparently no plan beyond "we'll work with someone" and, as far as I can tell, no release date for a major region is poor customer service. Not only Atlus, of course; many Japanese companies trying to serve international markets are still finding their feet at it (look at the mess that is anime publishing).

In any case in your first instance...do you seriously believe that the branches of a publisher don't talk to each other daily about ongoing projects? I'm not saying that they genuinely might not have known because, hey it could be a setback that's only happened in the last few weeks that has pushed it back. But to imply that Atlus withholds information from its USA branch is bizarre to say the least.

As far as Atlus not having a European branch...so what? That's on THEM to sort out. It absolutely does not matter their excuse for the delay, the only thing that matters is the impact on the people they're trying to sell to. Again, they're not your friend, they're trying to sell you a product. If you're unhappy with the service you have every right to complain. If I'm at a restaurant and it takes an hour to get served because they have no waiters assigned to the part of the restaurant I'm in then its not MY fault that I'm frustrated and complain about it, its them for not providing good service.

I find it kinda funny that you ask "what do you expect them to do?" because that's actually really easy to answer: either set up a European branch or make arrangements with a European distributor. This isn't exactly difficult to come up with, the solution speaks for itself. Actually implementing it is more complicated but again, that isn't the customer's problem. Hell if they really want they can make me the CEO of their European branch, I just finished my PhD and am looking for a job; I'll take it for a standard UK CEO salary of around a hundred thousand per year, call me.

Hoped that it wouldn't be delayed, but kind of expected it. Still, gives more time for the PS4 to drop in price. My PS3 died a few months ago, so I'm debating a repair or an upgrade.

I would be surprised if they DIDN'T delay it.

Which is fine, since I'm too busy for big games at the moment, and Fallout 4 is coming. I'd rather have my releases staggered. I just don't know why the waited until the last minute to tell us. We probably won't see this for a year, they had to have known well in advance that they wouldn't make the deadline.

I don't care, I know they'll make a great game. It's sad when a delay makes you HAPPY, because you know the people care.

Does it have to be a stylized Domino Mask like the characters wear?, or will my Guy Fawks mask work?

I've heard rumors that the game was pretty much done and they were moving on to beta-testing, but the delay was because they decided to make the game even bigger.

That could just be complete bullshit, but it sounds nice.

Definitely a stylized Domino Mask... because I don't think Guy Fawks is linked to a Persona you can summon when needed... :p

Just imagine if he was, though. And how insane the Persona would look...

OT: While I am somewhat disappointed, this gives me more time to play FF14 and Dragon Quest Heroes when that comes out.

Ark System pulls the same stunt aswell, might be even more companies that do so. Xrd was released half a year later in Europe and only on PSN.

Anyway, hardly know anything about Persona admittedly, but do have to say that it does not surprise me a single bit.

He would be an even crazier/insaner equivalent to not-Hitler if he were a Persona... :p
