I'm a huge fan of the Persona games and Shin Megami Tensei in general and I have always wondered about other people who have actually played the series. So in short...

What is it that you like about the recent Persona games or Shin Megami Tensei in general?
What makes it unique and what makes it fun for you?

Length. I am fucking poor.
The characters aren't always so stupidly obnoxious or whiny.
and despite almost always being on lower powered systems, especially the more recent games, I always feel like I'm getting a better value out of these games than some of the 60 dollar price-point games I buy these days.
Edit: Also, overall, I don't find the games that different from other turn based RPGs, but, the atmosphere, and, even though sometimes lulzy, but usually satisfactory dialogue. Also, it has a system that works and works well.
Edit 2: Sorry, I can't really english. It is morning for me and I am tired.

I'm not one for JRPG's, AT ALL!

But here's the fun thing, I liked Persona 3 so much that I bought it twice (once the normal version, then FES).

I liked how it mingled a lot of fun things in one awesome package. Even better, all the aspects of the game, so different from each other, served a role in complementing each other and the gameplay experience as a whole.

And that is why Persona 3 FES is my favourite JRPG.

I own Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1, Digital Devil Saga 2, Devil Summoner (PS2), Devil Summoner 2, Persona 3, Persona 3 FES, Persona 4, Devil Survivor, and I plan on getting Strange Journey.

While the Digital Devil Saga games are a close second, Persona 3 and 4 are still some of my favorite games period.

Besides P3, i own them all, and i feel bad for getting my Girlfriend into this, because she spent months playing these games...

Ok, I couldn't get into Devil Summoner (didn't like the combat mechanic), but I adore the Persona series. P4 is definitely my favorite of the bunch. It was a lot less grindtastic than P3, in my experience. Simply getting from the entrance of the dungeon to the boss usually gave you enough experience to defeat it, so you didn't have to spend time running around leveling up.

The only game in the series that I've played is P3: FES. I love this game.

What makes it special, I think, is that despite being neck-deep in Japanese culture and cliche, it presents itself in such a way as to draw Western audiences in, rather than alienating them. Though I had watched a fair bit of anime before playing the game, I can still see how it would appeal even if I hadn't. And because I've watched anime, the game was just that much more endearing.

I love everything about these games, from the dark atmosphere to the art style to the characters, to the story lines. It's all pretty awesome to me.

I've found lately that I have been unable to get into traditional JRPGs because of these games. I think SMT has ruined JRPGs for me; they are just that good.

As for Persona, it is a lot of fun. I find myself actually trying to get all the relationships because some of those stories are really very interesting. I love all the different Personas and try to make every one.

But, that being said, I think I like Digital Devil Saga a little better. I think it was probably the story. And the music, which imo is some of the very best video game music out there. It's so good, it's on my ipod.

I like how the stories are engaging and the people act like REAL PEOPLE and not whiny little brats.

I love Persona 4 for its humor, the mystery behind the story and the characters. Honestly, Square should start borrowing some of Atlus' writers.

I'm currently on Chapter 9 of 12 on the first Devil Summoner, but the combat system is preventing me from being motivated enough to finish. The second one made a lot of improvements and streamlined combat quite a bit, but I want to finish the first before I start the second. It's the same with the hack and slasher Drakengard, the first one has such repetitive combat that I'm having trouble forcing myself through it to get to the much better sequel.

The story in Digital Devil Saga was better in a more stand-alone sense. The world is original, the plot is completely original, and the characters are realistic. While by comparison, Persona tends to have really good characters and story, but a fairly mundane world (seeing as it's set in the real world, I guess it's just the nature of the beast).

I completely agree about the music though. I loved anything by Shoji Meguro and both series really show off his talents. The only slight localization issue was translating the second and third verse of Sera's song in DDS. The song works well in Japanese, but when converted to English it sounded a bit off. Although I really enjoyed the new opening theme (Danger by Etro Anime) that actually worked very well with the opening cinematic even though the song itself did not really suit the game at all (in a mood sense).

Own Demon Summoner and P4... both sucked balls, imo.
Thank you for that lovely bit of information, and for supporting the stunning intellectual quality of the Escapist Forums. I'm sure we all really appreciate it.
