Quick question: Who is your personal icon and why do you admire them / why do they inspire you?

Batman. Because he managed to turn the rage he felt at the murder of his parents into a hobby that repeatedly saves the world.

Yeah, I know Batman isn't a real person. Hope that doesn't matter. I don't have any real people icons. Real people always seem to have selfish motives, even if they're saving the world.

Of course, maybe all Batman's superhero-ing is just in lieu of therapy. Which is a selfish motive.

Well, I just ruined that for myself. Way to go, me.

Alex DeLarge. Because my name's Alex and there's never cool characters called Alex. And Mr DeLarge is brilliantly evil and cool.

I read the title wrong.
I would have said

< that.

But my personal icon in the line of what this thread is actually about would be David Attenborough, the man is pure molten awesome.

And so the list grows...

I bet you all think mine is obvious but it's actually George Harrison.

Jesus. I am to do as he does.
Dude, you are asking for the flaming with a post like that.

I admire a great many people for a great many reasons. It is hard to just say one person. and the list is too long to name them all.

He was the first to go on the list.
Mr Harrison is there too.

Jack Black.

He is a fantastic avatar of the comedy school that is 'The Fool'.

For that reason, he is a hero to me as someone who pulls the wool over everyones eyes by pulling the wool over his own. Genius.

Good Old Nietzsche. His philosophy really speaks to me. It combines all my favorite things, selfishness, ambition, a focus on enjoying life to the fullest, a flexible ethical structure, everything you'd need to be deemed an asshole by polite society.

I've never really had anyone as an icon in the traditional sense I guess, because I've never striven to be like anyone else. In fact I pride myself on being different. If I had to choose simply someone who inspired me it would be a tie between Voltaire and Poe.

Voltaire's advocation of free speech in a time when he was persecuted for it to me is the epitome of courage. I have more or less the same mindset in that I will speak my mind in any situation and to anyone regardless of what people may think of me or do to me for it.

Poe's poetry and stories inspired me to let go of certain built up emotions through my writing, and quite possibly kept me from committing acts of violence.

So yeah, those are mine.

Will Wright

Heck of a nice guy, has a great job(and he's good at it), and a fountain of knowledge and reason, also he respects any body's views politely.

Stephen Colbert- He's better than you!

Bret Hart. He's gone through so much both professionally and personally and is still standing, strong and as true to himself as he was when I first learned of him back in the 90s (I got into wrestling then), so he's a good role model.

In fact, I'm still very inspired by him. :)
