PETA Unveils Anti-Seal Hunt Game

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is at it again, this time with a cheap little Flash game meant to highlight the unpleasantness of Canada's infamous annual seal hunt.

The Vancouver Olympic Committee [http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/media/seal-phoque/seal-phoque-eng.htm] to "use its clout" to stop the slaughter.

As part of that effort, PETA has released Seal Slalom [http://www.petakids.com/sealSlalom.asp], a game in which players control a smiling little seal in a bright red touque as he rides down a snowy hill, avoiding trees, snowmen and of course the angry, club-wielding sealers. If we can say so without becoming overly embroiled in the debate over the seal hunt, this game is truly awful. The obstacles are so tightly packed as to be unavoidable, but that doesn't really matter because if you hit any of them, sealers included, you simply come to a halt until you steer away from it. No points are scored and the game appears to run forever or until you get sick of it and go do something else, whichever comes first.

To put it bluntly, PETA has disappointed me. PETA hit one out of the park last year with Cooking Mama [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/87494-Cooking-Mama-The-PETA-Version] series in which players beat the sweet holy hell out of a hapless dead turkey. What it lacked in gameplay it more than made up for in personality, as a psychotically-violent, knife-wielding Mama screamed at players for not being mean enough to their food. Seal Slalom, on the other hand, has no such redeeming characteristics. It's just really, painfully boring.

Fair warning to parents while we're at it: Small children might find this game amusing for a minute or two but you might want to exercise some caution about letting them poke around on PETA's OlympicShame2010.com [http://www.olympicshame2010.com/Default.aspx] website. The introductory video with the brightly-colored animated characters quickly gives way to live-action footage of seals getting their brains bashed in. Probably not the sort of thing you want to have to explain to your kids on Christmas eve.

PETA would you please leave my country alone. Environmentalists seem to love it here. PETA highlighting seal hunt, Greenpeace blocking oil sand projects...

I honestly didn't think Canada would be the kind of country to have a freaking annual Seal Hunt. I'm actually pretty disappointed about that.

how are these games suppose to make people think 'killing seals is actually a bad thing'?

it doesn't go on and on, there is an end. it's a challenge to see you quickly you can do it. 1:08 it took me

lol I would firmly say that VANOC has no care at all for what PETA has to say....

PETA people should be forced to get real jobs and work for a living. Caring about every little animal, IMHO, just shows how much free time these people have.

Fuck PETA.

Wait, so I don't get to cut up animals with a big knife?

Well, this game just lost my interest. Well done, PETA.

Not to mention that the PETA made a passable Mario clone to prevent chicken violence a while back. They got lazy this year.

Oh for christs sake...

ok, if anyone works for PETA and i reading the post, listen up:

This is the freaking olympics. Last time i checked, this is the one time every two years where nations can come together in peace for a little friendly competition. If you aren't aware, its EXTREMELY RARE these days to have a monthlong period of peace between nations. Are you seriously going to get your knickers bunched up because its being held in a country that has a STEREOTYPE of clubbing seals? This isn't progression: this is hate, something that PETA, of all people, should not be teaching. Shame on you.

Is it bad that I laughed at Mama Kills Animals and Olympicshame2010.com? Those were just funny. It wasn't funny because of the slaughter and such, but just because it takes things WAY out of context.

EDIT: I don't approve of clubbing seals to death. Shooting them would be a lot quicker and MUCH more painless.

Honestly? As much as I'm against seal clubbing and seal hunting, nothing done by PETA works.

Why the Olympics? What do they think the committee is going to do? Seriously PETA, best put your efforts into something else to stop the clubbing of seals (Which I am against).

Try another avenue as this one is a dead end guys.

Why? There's nothing wrong with hunting seals. I kind of wish that they'd sell the seal meat. I'd like to try some.

OT: Too bad the game sucked. Now that the development of bad games has been added to PETA's list of activities, it now has no redeeming qualities (at least in my opinion).

Oh, I do love PETA for it's antics.

They're hilarious. The cooking Mama parody angered me, though, because I found that the turkey itself was made improperly, anyway.

*Sigh*

Alright the seal hunt is fine. There are way worse things these people could be worrying about

As a Canadian I can safely say "those seals had it coming!"

PETA just needs to crawl in a pit, everything they do just ends up making themselves look bad...

EDIT: After playing the game for a few minutes I got my seal stuck in a seal clubber... I can't move at all... did I win or lose?

Hmm, It seems that people here are not satisfied with PETA's seal bashing game, Fear Not! For I have found a game which lets you kill seals, penguins and PETA members holding seals in equal number!

Gentlemen, I give you: Seal Hunter
