I won't dare say that Ol Pete hasn't created some awesome games and its not to say that I didn't enjoy the Fable games for what they were, but does anyone else think maybe he should concentrate more on making games than telling everyone his grande (and never realized) plans for his future games. I personally think we have learned that half the things he wants to do with a game never happens. Thoughts?

First, let me welcome you to the escapist.

Now let me ask you whether or not you were aware, that most people realized this about the time of Fable 2.

Thank you, I can't believe I haven't heard of this site sooner, pure goodness.

I realized it, I just don't think anyone has told him and now he really doesn't do anything but plan the next Fable game and talk about some thing that he doesn't deliver on. I remember when Black and White came out I didn't hear a peep from him and it was an awesome game. I actually haven't heard of anything that he's worked on besides Fable in years. I mean vision is important, but without delivery it just kinda sucks. It just reminds me of wasted talent and I think its kinda sad that someone who was seem as a visionary in the field for years has just stagnated.

Sir Peter is an idea man. He lives in his imagination. Our imagination have a habit of running away with us. Because the imagination is located in the brain, and the brain is located near the mouth our mouths also have a habit of running after our imagination. That's where we get the phrase "running your mouth off."

Peter Molyneux is strange. I find it hard to personally blame him for the disasters that were Fable 2 and 3 (he's only 1 man after all), and he has proven he can make good games. Every now and then when I see him talk he does get me going, but I always wait to see the game until I make any judgement. I think perhaps the problem is that his ideas have become too abstracted from what the games he makes actually turn out to be. He talks a lot about the potential of the medium and our emotional attachment to games and how we interact with them. Perhaps it's just he can't find a way to actually implement what he wants in to his games in an effective way. Or maybe the rest of Lionhead can't work out how to make his ideas work in the game. He doesn't seem to talk in very specific terms. Or the ways he comes up with (assuming it's him) to try and realise his ideas don't feel like they have had much thought put in to them. It feels like he has a lot of ideas about what games can be, but has no idea how to actually turn them in to that.

He's always been like that, he didn't just start with the Fable series although I imagine that's where most gamers these days have heard of him. You get used to it after awhile! Honestly I like the guy, sure he talks big and pretty much never lives up to his own hype, but at least he tries new things and has imaginative ideas.

Really wish he'd ditch the Fable series and go back to some of his older works however. Black & White 3? Yes please. More syndicate? Definitely. Another Populous game? Oh dear god yes! YES YES YES YES!

His loose mouth is the biggest problem, everyone has grand ideas they just know not to sell shit they can't deliver.
Could be the the underlying issue here is him not being an engineer, he simply does not realize what limitations his silly ideas will run up against and how much time it would actually take to make, then the actual engineers try to put together some unrealistic shit and well... Fable.

Let's just say he is too innovative for his own good :p

Mhm. He talks a big game, promises a lot, and then delivers about half of it and says sorry.

He's endearing in a way :p

I don't blame him for how the Fable games turned out, like I said, I enjoyed them. I just think he should take a step back and see what he can come up with, then after coming up with realistic expectations tell people what you're thinking in minimalist terms. I'm completely down for buying more Fable games. I think the design work in them is amazing and I spend multiple play throughs enjoying them. I didn't see anything majorly wrong with Black and White and Black and White 2. I think maybe he just needs to take all of the "awesome" new things for the games and instead of describing what it could be and how amazing it might be, take the time to describe what it is. Hopes and aspirations aside, I can make a glass of water sound amazing, thirst quenching and delicious, but at the end of the day once you get it, its just a glass of water. Not saying making games is that simple of a task, but advertising them is that simple. Everybody has hopes and dreams for their creations, but its like having a genius who's kids keep getting jobs at Walmart and McDonald's.

That Peter Molyneux is a little more imaginative than he is talented has been apparent since the original Fable, and he's done very little to offset that since then. This isn't really a new concept.

Maybe?

MAYBE he talks too much?

There is doubt?
There is, I find his claims personally hilarious and think he should talk more, after all.

Hi, I'm Peter Molyneux.

If you vote me for Prime Minister, I'll make it rain cheeseburgers every other Tuesday, also, the cheeseburgers will have emotional depth, so much depth in fact, that you will be wisked away to a world where every decision you make will impact the world, chaos theory shall reign supreme and the very ground will tremble with the complex moral decision you will have to face.

Also, there will be dogs to dig stuff up for you.

I'm down for the burgers. I would vote for Peter no lie, at least he has vision.
It's easy to have vision with head so far up in the clouds. On a clear day, you can see forever.

Yeah his head might be in the clouds, but at least its not up his ass lol. well most of the time.

Well they aren't bad games, the end vision is just not what he imagines it'll be. I can't honestly say he's an idiot, he's been making games for years, but I can say he has hopes that his dev time and financial backing will never allow. If he independently worked on a game without all those constraints maybe he could do something with it. I mean look at what Notch did with minecraft and that game doesnt even have a story.

I like Pete, to make fun of and to follow. Every time he talks I get wrapped up in what he is saying, totally backing what he says and looking forward for his next game with a fervor unmatched. Then I come back down to reality and realize how ridiculous he is. But still, I love his attitude, totally what you need to be a game designer, big ideas, huge imagination and the drive to accomplish it. Sometimes it falls flat, but at least it was tried.

None of the games suck, they just aren't what he expected or hoped. I haven't found a game of his that I didn't enjoy.
