I do some volunteering down at my local humane society and I've noticed that most pets personalities fall on a graph where the X-axis is personable-distant , and the Y-axis is energetic-laid back. If I knew how I'd put a little graphic here.

A personable pet loves to be around people. Any people that are around it will want to be with them in some way. A distant pet is either shy, nervous, or aggressive twords strangers. Though this only really applies to strangers as even the most distant pets will love and be around there owners (assuming proper treatment).

An energetic pet is one that is always moving, talking, and wants to play. Where as a laid back pet is one who would rather just relax and maybe lay in your lap.

Now these are gradient scales it's not just either or. And that pet personalities are just as complex as humans and cannot be so easily described. This is just a general idea.

For an example I'll use my cat. I'd say she is distant-energetic. She is afraid of strangers and will run and hid if anyone she doesn't know is around. And she is very playful (probably due to her age, she is about 3), and while she does nap, she is always up for chasing her toys.

So for discussion what do you think of this basic system I've derived, and where would you pets fall on it.
