I've got a cat who's 18 and is going out slowly and happily, but I will cry when he dies, he's been there since I was 2, and he's almost as much a part of home as my parents. It's much worse if they die young though - particularly as I'm trying to live up to being a vet I blame myself a lot. When my hawk died she was only 6 (they can live to 20 or more sometimes) and I haven't been able to summon the courage to get another - it's a year now...
Im hoping to be a vet as well, but isnt one of the biggest lessons of any medicine that there are some patients that will die? Although I will agree with you a young pet death is very sad and terrible.
Well, it's not as bad if you have your professional face on, but if it's one of your own it just hurts like hell. Good luck on becoming a vet anyhow! I find the worst part is putting them to sleep - very hard mentally.

I like to think myself a wee bit twisted, I think you just have to put yourself in the mindset. But if it were one of my own pets I would still do it, pain is pain if I can help relieve him/her of it I will.
Also thanks good luck to you as well.

Yeah, it was pretty cool. Never replaced it.
Goldfish are some tenacious little mofos...

On T: My dog died of kidney failure, and we mourned for a week, and got a new one just shy of a year later.

I don't cry. Actually I never cry when people/pets die. I probably shouldn't admit that.

I cry.

Pets are family to me.

I love my cats and dog more than some of my actual family so when they die, I treat them as I would a loved one.

It'll be a long while before I get a new one.
I feel the same way my dog (roumer) was often refered to as the fifth and favored child

The cats.. The first one was stabbed by my aunt's twisted husband and hung in her closet, bleeding to death slowly. I got to see it. That remains in my head every day.
Do I have permission to murder your aunt's husband? Your uncle perhaps?

So are you saying there is no point in honoring the dead? To respect its memory? Im a wee bit confused with your post perhaps its the wording but is that your point?
Yeah, go ahead and murder him. He also did the same thing with multiple rabbits. But they got divorced and my aunt divorced the family.

I have none. Never have. Don't mind other people's ones, really. I should imagine, in answer to the OP's question, it depends entirely on how much of a damn you give.

what kind of sick bastard is that? didn't you call the police on him cause i'm pretty sure that's illegal.

anyways, we have 5 dogs in a house that's way too small, which means they get in the way all the time which means I HATE THEM. also, there's hardly anything my parents ever talk about. that's pretty much why I spend as much time on the internet as I can. and we're getting another litter, they're going all the way to denmark for it...
so when one dies, I don't really care.
There was one I cared about but he died a LONG time ago. Now I can't even tell them apart anymore.

anyways, if you care about your pet I think you should wait a few weeks before replacing them. If you don't, you shouldn't even have pets in the first place.

So far I've had four dogs in my life time. One was stolen from me, I was very upset, the other died in an accident, again I was very upset. The third one we had to give away, has she was too wild and could not be trained. I wasn't that upset, I didn't even like her. Finally the fourth dog is the one I have now. She's still alive and kicking.

I've also had a few pet goldfish, but it didn't bother me that much when they died.
