Terry Pratchett reference: One Hand clapping?

'CL-'. The other hand provides the '-AP'.

Ok, so here's a line (on your screen no less):

_______________________________________________

You and the master walk contemplatively on the beach, then suddenly she draws it and says: "Make it shorter without touching it." (which you understand to mean interfering or altering it in any physical fashion. you've always been quite understanding like that.)

I sit and wait until nature fades the line's edges.

Alternatively, I close one eye.

Ooh, I like those. Not sure how closing one eye makes it shorter (unless you're at an angle and its flattening has the same effect), but the first is not you doing it (unless you're a solipsist) and the master's prompting assumes a somewhat objective reality (unless you're a solipsist). As solipsism is so lonely, I'd prefer to find another way.

Oh, solipsism is the idea that the world is only in your head--after all, you're the only one you know exists, right? (except...are you sure you exist?)

As Satan's nephew once said, "Nothing exists except empty space and you. And you are but a thought."

Now it's my turn.

If you have Ice Cream, I will give it to you.
If you don't have Ice Cream, I will take it away.

What kind of Koan is this?

I thought the goose thing was pretty interesting, it was used as a plot device in 52 (Grant Morrison) for one of the characters to develop or reach enlightenment or whatever, but all that aside philosophy has infinite questions and infinite answers, none of which are all encompassing and is constantly subject to your perceived interpretation of the term "philosophy".

Anyways, the best philosopher in the world is this man: http://freewebs.com/the_k_man/

A delicious Ice Cream Koan! (mine has grids...I think it's a waffle koan)

And how do you know thoughts exist?

Thoughts require a past, how do you know that exists? How do you know that you have not been created right now with this complete thought just finished? Is that really thinking?

And that's the mystery of it all.

Rather than spend an eternity attempting to unravel such a perplexity, though, I simply regard it as I would an odd piece of furniture, a trivial musing to be examined later. Pursuing wisdom and intelligence for the sake of obtaining either will only result in frustration.

Also, does a dog have Buddha nature or not?

Heh. Nice avatar.

And I've found it important when discussing philosophy to keep a distinction between the things I rationally think are correct vs. what I actually act on and believe when I'm not looking. Things like free will, the senses, etc.

Of course, there's an element of "Well there's gotta be other people, otherwise what's the point?"

What sort of freedom?

Freedom from the bottle? Then cook and liquidate the goose; it will pour out easily.

Freedom from the anguish of being trapped in the bottle? Create a new freedom that fits within the confines of the bottle.

How the hell did it get trapped in the bottle in the first place? If you find that out and you apply the reverse procedure you have a goose outside of the bottle with an intact bottle.

The original method was young goose in bottle being fed (admittedly it won't live for long, but they grow fast). Time travel would certainly work.

The goose managed to get itself within the bottle, assuming it wasn't super goose, the bottle must have been large, and as you never stated the size of the bottle, I will say: put bread outside the bottle and the goose will walk out.

Okay, spoiler time.

Okay well, here goes.

Q:A goose is trapped inside a glass bottle, unable to escape. How do you free the goose without damaging it or breaking the bottle?

A: There never was a goose or a bottle, they were just things I created with words, imagine the goose free of the bottle and see. There, now it is free.

This wasn't a puzzle or a test of knowledge, it was if anything a koan.

For a more detailed explanation (if you are feeling cheated or thought the answer was lame for some reason) go here: http://www.osho.nl/New-Osho-NL/EnglBooks/GooseOut.htm
Stop jerking me around. And no I won't read your stupid link...

I was going to say "persuade the goose to adopt a Buddha nature", mainly because you didn't say that the goose couldn't talk.

heat the bottle untill it become a plasma, then the goose will fry, be tastey and most importantly be free.

You teach the goose to free its mind from the physical shackles that are, and it shall be allowed to transcend to true mental freedom. There is no need for anything more when attaining that, in his situation. Elimination of the ego would be the simplest way, and the only one I know of, thus being the only true way for me.
