Here's my motto, which I wrote myself:

"Good things don't come to those who wait. They come to those who get off their asses, go out there, find them, and take them."

Shit, that's a damn good motto. Pretty much sums up my life story.

Oh I also have this one:

"If you took the smallest unit of time and found out how many of these units you have been alive for you shall have infinity. At every one of these units you have changend the future of the world and its inhabitants. Make these moments worth it"

I have two quotes by the author Henry Louis Mencken that best summarize my world view both related to ethics.

"Conscience is the inner voice that warns us somebody may be looking."

"Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant, in this field as in all others."

My interpretation of the butterfly effect- Whatever you manage to accomplish intentionally in your lifetime will always be dwarfed by what you do by accident.

About the optimism/pessimism, has anyone else seen Pan's Labrynth? Aside from being an awesome movie, it really reveals something about your character. There is an ending that can be taken two ways, depending on your nature. The magical, happy ending, or the brutal, more logical ending.

It's easier to get forgiveness than permission...

its a quote from british graffiti artist Banksy, its a kinda 'you only live once' attitude
Okay, I'm good with the quotation, but let's not misattribute it. The correct quotation is "It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission" and it's usually attributed to Grace Hopper
sorry, banksy was the only instace i've seen of it...

another great one is one from Robert Frost: "in three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on"

Sorry, but after a long session of Bioshock, this is all I can think of:

"A Man chooses, a Slave obeys" - Andrew Ryan

I like it. Seems like something I need to start listening to...

Another good Mencken:

"The difference between a moral man and a man of honor is that the latter regrets a discreditable act, even when it has worked and he has not been caught."

"When every star in the Heavens grows cold, and when silence lies once more in the face of the deep, three things shall endure: Faith, Hope, and Love, and the greatest of these is love"

-First Corinthians, chapter 13

I can't believe I'm quoting the bible, but it's apt. The only things we do which remain are the ones which impact others, and the greatest of these expressions is love.

10 out of 10 people die, Don't take life too seriously.
This is going to sound like an odd question, but why? If everyone dies, isn't that a reason to take life seriously while we're here, make our impact on the world rather than fading away in a blaze of hedonism?

'I will live my life by my standards, not your's. If they coincide, that's great. If they do not, you are the one in the wrong.'

Hedonism is great. And besides, the world cannot be changed. I wrote an essay on it at some point. I'll post it when I finish transcribing it.
