Ok Escapist Crew, I'm on the hunt for a new laptop or tablet but have no idea what to get. Thinking something with windows 8 cause its all new and stuff, but after reading reviews for it, seems like a bad choice. I'm currently studying and already have a gaming desktop so I don't need to run anything very high on it, but would still like the power to be able to if I change my mind.

So, I'm now thinking of an android tablet, or a nice windows 7 laptop.. but need help.
Anybody able to give me advice?

First off, your knowing your budget is kind of important to helping you. There is a big difference between spending $300, or $600, or $1000, or more.

Anyway, I would say don't go with the tablet, although you may not want to listen to me, as I have a huge disdain for tablets. Of course, it really depends on what you're planning on using it for. If you're going to be using it mostly for browsing the web and checking email, then a tablet might be the right choice. However, if you're going to be doing a lot of work on it (word processing, spreadsheets, etc), then a laptop is certainly the better option.

Agreed, tablets are great for email and internet on the fly, and are a great alternative to laptops for travelling and any other situation where you just wouldn't want to be carrying a laptop around, but they lack the same functionality for doing more serious work.

That's exactly it, basically it all comes down to how much you're willing to spend. I personally would look at something in the $700-$800 range. For that, you can normally get a decently powerful laptop, nothing extraordinary, but something who's specs wont be obsolete before the end of the year. My favourite brands to look at would be ASUS or Samsung, they generally have a decent quality/price ratio.

For some deals, check out newegg.com or ncix.com, they will generally have some great deals on laptops, with enough effort, you can usually snag yourself a steal.
