It's just about customizing your body, personally I love tattoos and piercings on women, but whatever floats your boat. Saying that though, can't stay ear lobe stretchers or chains, I've seen some guy have the entire outside of his ear torn off in a mosh pit because he had his ears stretched. *shudder*

It's because a lot of us find piercing quite pretty or good looking. I have ear studs. I'd love to get hip piercing but there isn't six weeks in a year that I could not take them out for.

Honestly, I think they look good on women and can look cool on guys. Within reason of course.

Pierced my tongue just because it would be untypical of me to do so.
I don't regret it. People I'm about to kiss always get a little excited smile when they see it.

That's my why. Sorry for it not being more interesting.

Hey, thanks for the responses, I might be a bit less ignorant now =)
It looks like the problem is that I don't understand fashion either, and while I can understand why people do self destructive things for short term gain (e.g. food) I couldn't see the gain from deliberately injuring one's self. Normally I just accept people are different and am cool with it, but I can't really do that with the feeling unwell at the sight of them.

I have my tongue pierced for purely sexual reasons. I'm not joking when I say that lasses can't get enough of a guy who owns a vibrating tongue bar.

Cause they have an infection fetish. Hell if I know. The only place I like a piercing is on a girl's nose. Other than that, you look like a bull.

I don't think people think about "damaging their body" when they get piercings, and I think this video pretty much covers this.
Replace tattoos with piercings.

Thanks, but 30 seconds of google images on the subject has shown me that images and videos about the more extreme piercings is a wall I'll never get over. I'll give it an attempt though to see how far I can make it.

I cannot understand for the life of me why people get their bodies pierced. However, I equally cannot understand for the life of me why I got my own tattoo on my back last year, I just wanted it. And it is awesome.

The simple answer would be that people think it looks good. I don't have any myself and wouldn't want it, but some people look good in it. It's like... high heels can't be that easy/good to use/have but it still looks good.

Just guessing about the high heels part, am a man so I wouldn't have a idea. Or would I.

If you play sport, or go to the gym, your injuring yourself.
If you want to look up pointless, look at bodybuilders. What they do to their bodies to look good is amazingly unhealthy short and long term (and someone who works out normally half the size of them is usually stronger too) there is nothing healthy or positive about it except an aesthetic.

Piercing a hole in yourself that (for most piercings anyway) is just unused flesh that will heal if you let it, it hinders you in no way (sure there's a risk of infection, but I'm not sure that its extreme enough to really call it a problem) and won't really stop you from living a full life.
The point of my little example is that maybe your difficulty accepting it is a visual thing, a right there right now ick factor, which you have created a theory around.
