I'm very confused at the hatred for Piers Morgan. He and the average internet denizen have so much in common!
Seriously, yeah, there's a lot of this. Very much the same old.
Well, except in his case he's not anonymous, and he's getting paid, which isn't true for most people on the net.
...
And it's only half true for you, isn't it Graham?
Doesn't null out the similarities, though.
And despite the hatred, I bet that 99% of the internet would leap at the chance to have Piers Morgan's job. Because integrity on the web isn't actually a thing.
I think a lot of it is to do with his general demeanour.
He comes across immediately as quite smug, arrogant and pretentious. But at the same time, as you get to hear the content of his reactions and how he reacts, he comes across as very childish.
On top of this though, there are the scandals of phone hacking where he is alleged to have hacked the phones of a dead teenager and the families of dead soldiers, in order to acquire leads for his newspapers. Supposedly he deleted voicemails on her phone, which caused the police to believe that the teenager was still using her phone, but just not answering calls for whatever reason - bringing false hope to her parents. It is alleged, but that it didn't shock people kind of reflects public opinion of him. It did legitimise a lot of people's hate, for which most of the content does come across as childish in itself, jealousy of success, fame, money etc.
His reaction to people having a jab at him on TV, such as Ian Hislop and Clive Anderson, was to have several of his reporters devote their days to following them around to try and dig up stories on them. As far as I am aware, he wasn't very successful. It was a pretty childish return and I doubt his superiors at the paper were pleased with the expense to the company for him wishing to enact revenge on personal beef.
He also was editor for two papers in Britain which are renowned for having little to do with real news and more to do with fear-mongering and extreme right political viewpoints. Obviously people are entitled to their opinions, voice and in print, but I think people don't like the propaganda-esque nature of it and presentation of fiction as fact, under the guise of supposed journalism, people see as manipulative and dangerous, and exacerbates big issues/political topics in Britain (such as immigration).
So I think people resent the fact that he is rich on the means that he has. There are plenty far richer people that it would make more sense to be jealous of on a monetary-basis. Surely some sort of professional athlete for football or similar. That pay bracket, young age, often good looks etc. is surely more appealing and a source of jealousy, than the want to be Piers Morgan.
